020 – SDP – Listener Question: How To Deal With Your Ex
from Surviving Divorce Podcast · host GD Lengacher
How To Deal With Your ExI received a voicemail question this week asking how to deal with an ex that won't accept the divorce and thinks you're cheating when you date 2 1/2 years after the divorce. If your ex hasn't accepted the divorce after that length of time there are at least two possible scenarios:1. Your ex is stuck in the healing process, possibly still in denial.2. Your ex comes from a religious tradition that does not accept any dating/re-marriage after divorce. In either case, there's not much you can do. Just be firm and let your ex know that there is no hope of reconciliation. How Are Adult Children Impacted By DivorceAdult children are deeply impacted by divorce. They are hurting as much as younger children do and maybe even more. Adult children may understand more about what caused the divorce and, therefore, may pull away from the parent they think is at fault. The best thing you can do is just love them. If they are pulling away from you, give it time. Things will probably return to normal in time. If they are pulling away from your ex, let them know that you will not be hurt if they maintain a relationship with the other parent. You may secretly relish in the fact that they are siding with you, but it's in your kids best interest to maintain a relationship with both parents.Wrap-upYou can support the podcast by starting a free trial with Audible.com herePlease consider leaving a review in iTunes if you enjoy the podcast.
