Torah 21.7: Where Does a Person Truly Live?Where does a person actually live? Is it wherever his body happens to be, or in the world created by his thoughts, values, and deepest perceptions? In this shiur, Torah 21 develops a radically different model of growth. Wisdom is not limited to what the human mind can build through its own logic. A person can make himself into a כלי, becoming receptive to levels of Divine wisdom that previously remained completely beyond him.At the heart of the shiur is a transformative principle: a person is where his mind is. דעת is not merely information. It is truth that has become integrated into a person’s operating system, shaping his ambitions, emotions, and experience of reality. To the extent that a person’s דעת is aligned with Hashem, he becomes connected to the Source of life itself. This is חיים נצחיים, not simply remaining forever in one physical state, but possessing a life that remains rooted in its eternal Source.This also changes the meaning of lack, suffering, and anger. “If you have דעת, what are you missing?” A painful situation may still hurt, but דעת allows a person to recognize that he has been placed exactly where his tafkid requires him to be. Anger and cruelty emerge from constricted consciousness, from the feeling that reality is not unfolding as it should. לעתיד לבוא, when the world is filled with דעת ה׳, even forces that now appear locked in conflict will exist together in peace.Yet not everyone will experience that truth at the same depth. The shiur compares דעת to water covering the seabed. The surface may appear equal, while beneath it one place is shallow and another immeasurably deep. What overwhelms one person may be another person’s most basic understanding. Every tzadik is therefore “singed” by the chuppah of another, by a level of perception that still surrounds him from beyond. And the effort to grow in this world establishes something eternal: a person who makes himself into a grower here acquires the capacity to continue ascending there. Are we merely collecting knowledge, or becoming people whose search for truth and closeness to Hashem can continue forever?
