023 Academia: An Entrepreneurial Place with R. David Lankes

from Forward Thinking Experts · host Sher Downing, PhD

EdTech Speaks interviews another intriguing guest by the name of R. David Lankes. David is the incoming Virginia & Charles Bowden Professor in Librarianship at the University of Texas at Austin. His latest book Forged in War explores how today’s technology and media world is a result of over a century of war and conflict. He teaches online, researches online and presents online. Noticing a pattern here? Every part of his job is enabled and transformed with technology.Much of his focus on this episode is on librarians. These are community-based agencies of change linked across all parts of a community (schools to public to medical, to law, to academic). David encourages others to see librarians as partners instead of simply service providers. Libraries today are more than simply book services, which seems like an archaic concept, knowing what we know today. He believes that mass social networks for professionals will evolve to peer-based learning networks, accelerated by advances in machine and deep learning. The future of education is better by combining experience with publicly available professional development with formal education. If this doesn't come to fruition, he thinks that higher education as we know it may implode from becoming over commoditized credential engines of job training.Recapping the interview, David says, "Academia can be an entrepreneurial place if we think differently. Libraries and Librarians are agents of disruption and reconnection."Learn more and connect with David here:Twitter: https://twitter.com/rdlankesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/rdlankesLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/r-david-lankes/https://DavidLankes.orgForged in War - https://www.amazon.com/Forged-War-Century-Created-Information/dp/1538148951/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1625749110&sr=8-1 Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
