Johan Steenkamp grew up in Mozambique and South Africa and after finishing high school spent two years travelling through the UK & Europe. He eventually went back to South Africa and studied engineering & physics before commencing his podiatry degree. After graduating in 2010, Johan's first podiatry job was in Singapore, followed by Malaysia, Sydney and for the last four years Perth, where he is now very much settled with his wife and 9-month old daughter. On this episode we discuss: Graduating from podiatry and why his first job was in a foreign country and not South Africa. Feeling isolated and why it is essential to attend CPD events in person. Balancing work in private practice while maintaining the security of part-time employment in a hospital in Perth. Taking calculated risks and letting the numbers help you make decisions. What he learnt most setting up his practice. It's easier to start and cost less than expected He made money much quicker and covered his outgoings way ahead of schedule. Working privately and in the public system can be difficult in regards to family time, but it's only temporary. Writing a chapter in The Diabetic Foot published by World Scientific.
