The Manhattan Project was a top-secret research and development undertaking during World War II aimed at producing the first nuclear weapons. Directed by General Leslie Groves and physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the project was authorized by President Roosevelt in 1942 following warnings from scientists like Albert Einstein about German nuclear potential. This massive effort eventually involved over 130,000 employees and cost approximately $2 billion, utilizing remote sites like Oak Ridge, Hanford, and Los Alamos. The project's scientific foundations rested on the principles of nuclear fission and Einstein's mass-energy equivalence, which fundamentally transformed the human understanding of matter.
