032 PT.2 JFK Why Americans reject the official JFK story

from HISTORY AMERICAN · host HISTORY AMERICAN

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, remains one of the most debated events in American history. The Warren Commission (1964) established the official narrative: Lee Harvey Oswald acted as a lone gunman, firing three shots from the Texas School Book Depository. Two days later, Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald, an act the commission also ruled was committed alone. However, public skepticism persisted, fueled by the controversial "magic bullet" theory and autopsy irregularities, including missing physical evidence like Kennedy's brain and burned medical notes. In 1979, the House Select Committee on Assassinations revised the official stance, concluding that Kennedy was "probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy" based on acoustic evidence of a fourth shot from the "grassy knoll"—though this evidence was later scientifically challenged. Prominent alternative theories include Jim Garrison’s allegations of a vast plot involving the CIA, the mafia, and anti-Castro groups, and Howard Donahue’s hypothesis that Secret Service agent George Hickey accidentally fired the fatal headshot. Others point to Oswald’s background as a Soviet defector and his mysterious 1963 trip to Mexico City, where he was under CIA surveillance. Recent document declassifications in 2022 and 2025 reveal extensive covert U.S. operations in Cuba but have not yet provided a "smoking gun" for a conspiracy. Despite these releases, roughly 60% of Americans still doubt the lone-gunman conclusion.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/history-american--6771636/support.IWelcome to the HISTORY AMERICAN podcast.
