The history of water fluoridation began in 1901 when Dr. Frederick McKay discovered that fluoride prevented cavities despite causing the "Colorado Brown Stain". By 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan, pioneered artificial fluoridation after Dr. Trendley Dean established a 1 ppm "ideal" dose. However, the Manhattan Project revealed a darker side; fluoride was essential for uranium enrichment, but its toxicity was often hidden. Dr. Harold Hodge, the project's toxicology chief, initially classified fluoride as a neurotoxin in 1945 but later publicly advocated for its safety while his findings remained classified for decades. Scientifically, fluoride poses significant risks. While much is excreted, the remainder accumulates over decades, with 99% settling in the bones, potentially causing painful skeletal fluorosis. It also accumulates in the pineal gland, accelerating calcification and potentially affecting sleep and development. Furthermore, numerous studies link high fluoride exposure to lower IQ in children and a possible increased risk of osteosarcoma. These concerns fueled three major conspiracy theories:Communist Plot: Fear that Soviet agents used fluoridation to weaken the American population during the Cold War.Corporate Interests: The theory that companies like ALCOA pushed fluoridation to profit from toxic industrial waste, supported by the ADA, which receives millions from brands like Colgate.Mind Control: Claims that fluoride was used in Nazi camps to make prisoners submissive, a practice allegedly adopted by the US to pacify citizens.Today, controversy persists. In 2015, the US government lowered its recommendation to 0.7 ppm due to overexposure. Ongoing lawsuits, such as those by Food and Water Watch, seek to ban the practice, while recent recalls of products like Colgate Total in Mexico due to irritation highlight continuing safety concerns.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/history-american--6771636/support.IWelcome to the HISTORY AMERICAN podcast.
