The legend of Atlantis originates in Plato’s dialogues, Timaeus and Critias (c. 360–340 BC). He describes an incredibly advanced and wealthy empire that existed 9,000 years before the famous Greek legislator Solon. According to Plato, the god Poseidon established the island kingdom beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the Strait of Gibraltar). Its magnificent capital featured nested circular rings of water and land, temples clad in gold and silver, and access to unique resources like the precious metal orichalcum. However, as generations passed, the Atlanteans became corrupted by greed and a hunger for power. When they attempted to aggressively conquer the Mediterranean world, only ancient Athens successfully resisted their invasion. Shortly after their military defeat, a series of catastrophic earthquakes and floods caused the entire island of Atlantis to sink into the depths of the sea in a single day and night. Most modern historians and geologists view Atlantis as a philosophical allegory crafted to illustrate Plato's theories on governance and moral corruption. Nevertheless, centuries of fascination have led to various theories about real-world historical inspirations. Leading scientific candidates include the volcanic eruption of Thera (Santorini), which devastated the Aegean and the Minoan civilization on Crete, and the sudden sinking of the city of Helike in 373 BC, an event Plato witnessed firsthand. Other proposed locations include the ancient kingdom of Tartessos in southern Spain and the Sus-Massa plain in Morocco, alongside esoteric theories by figures like Edgar Cayce and Madame Blavatsky. Ultimately, the legend remains a classic example of geomitology, where real ancient disasters are transformed into enduring myths.
