The legend of Atlantis originates in Plato’s dialogues Timaeus and Critias, where he describes a wealthy, technologically advanced empire located beyond the Pillars of Hercules. Founded by Poseidon, the concentric-ringed island kingdom ruled over vast territories until its aggressive expansion was halted solely by ancient Athens. Following their military defeat, a series of catastrophic earthquakes and floods sank the entire civilization into the sea in a single day and night. While most modern academics and geologists classify Atlantis as a philosophical allegory illustrating Plato's views on societal decay and moral corruption, the mystery has sparked centuries of research and diverse theories. Some scientists suggest the myth was inspired by real-world disasters, such as the catastrophic Late Bronze Age volcanic eruption of Thera (Santorini) which devastated the Minoan civilization, or the sudden destruction of the city of Helike in 373 BC, an event Plato witnessed during his lifetime. Other prominent theories place the legendary city near the ancient, wealthy kingdom of Tartessos in southern Spain, which suddenly vanished around 500 BC, or on the Sus-Massa plain in Morocco. Furthermore, geological discoveries like the Bimini Road in the Bahamas have kept search efforts alive despite scientific consensus that such formations are entirely natural. Beyond historical and geological investigations, the legend has been adopted by esoteric movements and conspiracy theories. For instance, Edgar Cayce claimed Atlantis was a highly advanced civilization inhabited by fallen angels and the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, predicting its resurrection in 1968. Madame Blavatsky popularized the idea that Atlantis was the home of a superior "Aryan" root race. The latter theory even prompted a Nazi SS expedition to Tibet in 1938 under Heinrich Himmler to search for ancestral evidence.
