038 The Super Age: Decoding Our Demographic Destiny with Bradley Schurman

from Growing Older Living Younger: About longevity, wellness, healthspan, · host Dr. Gillian Lockitch

"If future generations are to remember us more with gratitude than sorrow, we must achieve more than just the miracles of technology. We must also leave them a glimpse of the world as it was created, not just as it looked when we got through with it." Lyndon B Johnson  Today we reflect on how our life on earth will be impacted, as declining birth rates and increased longevity drastically reshape population demographics.  My guest today is Bradley Schurman, a demographic futurist and author of The Super Age: Decoding our Demographic Destiny. He is the founder and CEO of The Super Age, a research and advisory firm specializing in helping organizations understand the challenges, and harness the opportunities of demographic change with a focus on population aging.   As Bradley describes, for most of human history, populations have resembled pyramids with lots of kids on the bottom while relatively few people made it to old age. But declining birth rates, and increased longevity are starting to square off those  pyramids in the US, and most of Western Europe. In places like Japan, they're actually inverting with very few young people at the bottom, and a lot of older people at the top. We discuss the potential impacts on life in the future..
