039 – Revive Yourself – Emotional Bullying, Why Your Self Improvement Can Be Hard For Your Friends & Family, And How This Applies To Crabs In A Bucket

from Revive Yourself Podcast With Ryan Martin · host Revive Yourself Podcast With Ryan Martin

I was recently talking to a fellow coach Jon Sheridan and he mentioned that a lot of his clients had been having to deal with negative input from their friends and family about being boring now they are looking after their health and them resenting the fact they have dropped body fat and now look better. Ironically, often it was these same people that were pressuring their other halves and friends to do something about it in the first place. This is something I encounter quite often when people join my programs. When people have to go through a stage of healing their day to day life and social events can change quite drastically. All you can eat brunches with friends are out of the question so people look for alternative things to do for fun such as climbing, going for walks in the country, art etc. This change can be hard for people to take because firstly it makes friends and family think they are losing a someone to drink and hang out with, and secondly, as the person’s health and therefore appearance improves for the better (oftentimes drastically) it makes them start to re-evaluate their life and choices. This is something people don’t like to do because as you probably know, people seldom enjoy change, or having a mirror thrust in front of their face  where they have to talk a long hard look at themselves. This generally leads to people trying to pull their friend back into their old way of life with nasty remarks, sarcasm and jokes on the person’s behalf. It’s very similar to when crabs get caught in a fisherman’s bucket and one of them tries to escape, the rest of the bushel pulls them back down so they have to endure the same fate as them. As this had been something we both had seen a lot of recently I decided to do a short episode on this today to tell people this is a normal problem to deal with, to keep going and to ignore the “haters” because you are on your own journey and you’re doing what you have to do to make your own life better.
