This is like follow-up inception, but I'm dark sky. You recall I reported an issue with the widget on the or complication not widget on the Watch and it was like what I think the day after we recorded last week I sent you a screenshot and said hey guess what dark sky wrote back and said yep, it's an issue We're working on it. So they totally acknowledged that their complication is an issue which means whenever it is fixed I will probably use dark sky more often. So That being said, that's a little exciting.
It's just good to know that it's a known thing. They're working on it So I was excited to hear back hugs happen people report them. They get fixed everybody wins That's great. And then you just got the placebo effect that it was always 72 and overcast whenever you know walk outside We're like oh, it's actually pretty nice out today.
This is kind of nice. I like this glad it's not 72 and overcast I don't need this rain jacket Yeah, you might be able to fool me on the temperature maybe like I know it's warm this time here But like all right I can I can live in the placebo world that it's 72 I know it's lying the second it tells me it's overcast and the Sun is beating down on me So that's that's the part that I wish the placebo worked for wait Are you saying that going outside and just looking up is better than using the weather app on your watch? Oh? No, no, I'm definitely not because I don't want to go outside in the first place I'm a hermit creature.
You you know this and like you are one of my beings too. You don't like being outside I actually love being outside. Let's let's get that straight like I go on walks every day if I load to be inside I would just stay inside during my lunches, but no I go out and I walk outside So I like being outside. Yes, I'm a hermit me And I don't come out of my social cave Adam kind of keeps himself doesn't post everything about his life on the interwebs So everyone knows his super security questions.
No one knows your first dog. How cute So the other thing I want to follow up on was the fact that you tweeted a picture of your desk Which I plan to do I plan to do this tomorrow when there is good lighting in my room where the desk is so that I can You can easily see the desk. It's a little tough to see it when it's dark like it is now so tomorrow when the natural light can flood the room and I will take a picture and before this episode post the Picture of the desk will be on the Twitter's so you're gonna stage everything and then you're gonna hashtag it hashtag no filter You know just a let everyone know that this is your natural that's the way it looks all the time No, I'm not going to hashtag it no filter. I'm definitely not of the snapchat generation But but I am going to stage it in the sense that it needs some light because if I took a picture right now You'd probably see you know black Mostly because the lights that are on the desk or the light that is on the desk the lamp is a hue light And it's only set to like 15% Of the you know capacity that the LED can go to and even if I could get up to a hundred percent I don't know how well you can see it But I mean I guess I can say I will try it tonight But yeah, I think it's gonna be a lot better looking if I wait till the morning It was just a joke on the no filter thing Like you didn't have to explain it now the joke's not funny.
Yep. This is me taking it literally again. Sorry about that So and the 3.5 millimeter like headphone wows that we talked about last week that you just basically lost your mind over I am happy to report that I did take a look online and found an option to ship me an extension For like four dollars without having to integrate it The cable was like 75 cents and the shipping was like three dollars or something like that So for like four dollars I got my my cable coming to me with a six foot extension So that's not its way. It's not here yet.
So I'm still doing the record where it's like I can't lean back But by next week this won't be a problem anymore. Thank you forever, man. Yeah I'm happy. I'm still bothering you in this respect But that's okay, at least you you wouldn't you fix the problem or you're on the path to fix the problem Which is good I totally forgot about this and I meant to see if I have an extra one and I might still have one so you can just pay for Shipping to return your other one and I'll ship you this one and you can be out like eight dollars for a cable Yeah, but that seems like a logical thing to do So the the other thing that is the timely follow-up is this is the end up well This is the beginning of a new month, but the end of last month.
I watched my August movie, which was it man which I Guess I should start out by saying when I went and kind of like looked for this movie I did some googling first and I noticed that it is Goes by yip man. It looks like like yip in some Cultures that look like unless unless I'm like totally missing the movie But it looks like it's just the way that it is debuted in the United States that it's just we dropped the Y at the beginning But and so I found it. I watched it. I didn't I had no idea going into this that I was to watch I assume version one, but there is a two and a three.
Is that correct? That's correct Yeah, and I did put version one so next time I'll just have to include like actual like links to the content just so you don't get confused Yeah, go here Lou press by Yeah, shut up and pay for it and watch it So that being said I you know I found it and I watched it and So last week, you know, I kind of mentioned that I had started it and I kind of restarted it and watched the whole thing all the way through again And you know subtitles definitely make it a movie interesting There were you know, I was able to follow on pretty well I feel like I do have a couple questions, but before I dive into I guess questions overall movie wise Like I'm definitely gonna give this one thumbs up. I liked it a lot I thought it was a pretty good movie and a good balance of like story without too much action And then you know, like there was there was a plot to it if that makes sense It wasn't all just like a shoot him up beat him up bang You know It wasn't you know that sort of action movie because sometimes I think that gets too carried away in today's day in world But it wasn't quite that bad for me. So it was it was good I liked it overall thumbs up for sure, but I definitely do have a couple questions Well, let's just pause for a minute like this is the first movie you've given like a thumbs up to and it's a movie But I at least expected you to actually enjoy so this is kind of a moment that we have to delve into a little bit So you're saying that out of all the movies you've watched and if we can do a quick recap here It was Iron Man in January mean girls Batman the 1990 version science of the lambs Star Wars episode 4 snatch We skip skating private ride and then it man.
So you're telling me that of all those movies This has garnered the highest amount of Lou praise. Yeah, so I'm pretty sure I gave something like at least one or two other ones Thumbs up. I thought I gave iron man a thumbs up. I could be wrong But you said that one was boring at times or you said yeah, yeah action blah blah blah Like this one you haven't said a lot of bad things about yet So that's why I'm a little like taking it back.
Yeah, and I'm pretty sure I gave mean girls a thumbs up It was pretty funny, but I could be wrong there too. We could look back in the archives, but um, but yeah I mean to be honest like that the movie was good. I thought um, I Mean there was a really good balance between like plot and like like a story to the plot and then like the fighting That you know or the like the battles or whatever you want to call it. Um, I won't lie I got a little bit lost in just I mean there's obviously naming wise.
This is really really tough So I didn't always understand So there's the character whose name is I think it's Lin or Lim or L. I am So that is like his like friend or something like that Maybe family not a hundred percent positive But he's the guy that goes and like fights the general at one point and then dies After being like shot and so I didn't quite understand their connection the entire time that was kind of confusing to me at one point But I mean overall the the actual film to your point like to your astonishment. I liked it. Yeah, so the answer your question about About Lin.
Yeah, so Lin is a another master of I know it is it yeah, they're friends, but I think he's another master I have to rewatch or reread through it But yeah, so it's a friend who has to fight the general and then yeah ends up losing and dying because it's basically the whole thing is to Find out who's who's martial arts are the best right who style is the best? Which is why you know his his wing Chun is so like kind of coveted by everybody because you see how fast he moves and how basically he you know It's very defensive but offensive also It's really cool and there's like some truth behind this too And I'm sure you know you got to read the forward and the the after credits right to kind of let you know exactly that This is a real person and these are you know dramatized events, you know or dramatized interpretations of events that actually happen So yeah, so that also kind of interested me because I think any time something I mean I'm this way with bucks too Like if I'm gonna read a book I would prefer nonfiction because I want something that has happened and I have no imagination We have figured this out and very little creativity. So That already kind of like piqued my interest was like, okay, huh? This is almost like a historical narrative in some ways, you know just dramatized which was cool I really thought that that kind of kept me interested and In some ways it was kind of hard to think that this was set so long ago, you know I mean that this happens so long ago because you know one I never really can recall the time of that I learned about this in any sort of like history class or anything like that not that it was like Some major major like you know events in like it wasn't World War three kind of thing but you know what I mean like I never learned about this in any in any class in school and You know it was interesting to kind of remind myself at times because this is all like refilled I don't know.
I think this movie came out in 2008. Is that right Adam? Oh, yes, 2008 It's set during the late 1930s. Yeah, set during the 30s, but comes out in 2008 and so I mean like the film is really good There's no like they didn't try to like degrade the film quality to make it look like it was like filmed in the 30s Do or something, you know, it's films, you know using modern equipment but like set in the 30s, which was cool, too So yeah, I mean, I don't know man.
I really like this one This was one that like I would consider watching two and three like I actually would consider going for that See it was definitely worth a watch three. We'll have to come back to that one. Okay, three we have to come back to you Now you got me curious. What do I have to come back to three?
We'll talk about that one later. I mean two is a definite watch because it's basically the same as the first movie Just with a different antagonist So I mean if you like the first one then you're gonna like two because he's just gonna beat up another guy and it's kind of great And then three yeah, I have to I have to watch three again to see if you'd be into that one I think I watch this one actually. Is this the one is it three the one with Mike Tyson? Yeah, if three is the one with Mike Tyson that one's okay, too You could watch that one, but I think I definitely like to choose a good one I think you'll like that one it man three.
We'll look at I'm thinking it man the final fight Which is the one I'm kind of like we'll have to see about that one. Okay. All right. Yeah, I mean I don't know.
I thought it was really good. I definitely enjoyed it and I really appreciated So you mentioned that his wing shine like really balances defense and offense or however you want to say that essentially like you know blocking and and actually punching or whatever and I really think that the film also captured that really well because you can definitely see as he's filming sometimes He is definitely in a very very very defensive, you know Like posture and almost no energy is being exerted in watching him fight as he is just you know Like punch for punch for punch or like you know hit for hit or swing for swing able to just Deflect any amount of energy that is being put in by his opponent to fighting him Which to me just was like kind of an astonishment I was like wow man the amount of conservation that is going into his fighting and then once his opponent is at a point where his opponent can You know has expelled some energy or exhausted some energy and is at a point where he can then attack He comes back and with you know just an amazing amount of like quick force It's a lot of release like sort of what I noticed or like the difference of things I noticed from it from like you know boxing or other types of like fighting that we might you know He used to is that it is almost like short rapid succession of an amazing amount of like punches Are or force and that seems to be like the trend of the fights that I noticed like throughout the entire thing It was like okay cool I'm going to defend defend defend and then when I'm ready to attack it's like whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa and it's done You know, which was crazy defend counter defend counter defend counter is like okay now you're you're done Yeah, you spent all this energy, you know just trying to hit me Yeah, it's really fun like the fights are choreographed really well, and it just it flows really nicely and like you said It's exciting to you like there's not a lot of dull parts especially when they're going to the spice But they're not long and drawn out like there is a pretty you know good Begin beginning middle and end and they kind of wrap things up. They don't really kind of like leave you hanging, you know Yeah, they definitely don't really leave you hanging. So I don't know it was good.
I was happy with that one I think my next one is Lord of the Rings. I haven't looked it, but I'm pretty confident that's coming up here Yep So this month for September you get to watch Lord of the Rings the fellowship of the ring extended edition good God Isn't this like a 17 hour movie? No, the whole series all together 17 hours. I believe we're 12 Maybe it's only 12, but this is probably gonna be a good three and a half hour movie So three and a half hours.
Holy shit. All right. Well, I better get started on it like tomorrow because it's gonna take forever in a day to watch Well, I know but it just one is three and a half hours good God. It's so long Oh, I can't even tell you if I've ever watched a three and a half hour movie before well next month You'll be able to say that you did I guess that's true.
So anyway, are you content with it, man? Any other questions for me before we move on? No, I guess I'm still a little bit surprised I'm not gonna say shocked because it's not like a shocker. It's a good movie.
You know my opinion So I'm glad that you actually like the movie But I'll just put that in the notes forward next year that you liked the foreign film with lots of punching Well, it's not too much punching but with punching and kicking in plot So I just got to find movies that go action plot action plot which is every movie out there But not too much action not too too much predictable action I think I'm getting it like I think next year's list will be really refined to your taste and maybe I'll be able to just Push you a little bit more kind of just trend you towards mainstream media again Okay, man. I'm looking forward to it. I am so all right So this week I kind of wanted to dive into something that I guess I would say there isn't a whole lot of diversity in but like mapping apps And so you know really When we jump into this arena, there's only like three or four big names that I can think of and I mean I came up with three I don't know if you have another one you want to toss in there But there's been a lot of change over this area in like 15 years of tech but the big three today seem to be like Google Maps Apple Maps and ways is you know a big one toss in there I don't know if I'm missing any that I would say that you know at this point you would like to toss into the arena I obviously like old old school that was like, you know We think like MapQuest or Garmin or like Tom Tom and all those guys But is there anything else I'm missing Adam say I'm still rocking my old school like hardware Garbin that you bought that you had to actually like download the software pack put on an SD card and stick it in there to do the upgrades Yeah, man. I miss those days.
Okay. You still have one of those. No, no, I got rid of a long time ago Okay, I was gonna say I was like man those things were like there were like mini televisions like, you know rear projection televisions like little tiny Well, you're thinking way old school No, they had modern ones that were like around when smartphones were just getting off the ground that you know had Batteries and then we plug them into car chargers or like car adapters, but they were small like they were the size of Probably like whatever the plus size phones are these days. Okay.
All right. Well, yeah, I guess they got sort of modern toward the end there Yeah, they picked it up. I mean technology We know moves on that hockey stick here sure sure the one thing I think you're missing is like every car's built-in navigation system ever So you talk about every different, you know manufacturer of car usually they all have different nav systems So I think you're missing that if you're talking about like actual navigation apps on phones, you know That's like you said that you have the three big players but if you look at actual like navigation apps that everyone uses not limited by device then I think you you throw all the The car manufacturers in there and whatever third-party map system they put on there is which a lot of them might be powered by the same data But the actual like navigation software is different. Yeah, like the UI overlay and all that crafting Yeah, even all of that.
Yeah, cuz it's it's when you get into carving it I really do think it is like it's not even just like one company that's making that all work It's like sometimes like five right or ten, you know It's like routing data is right about this company traffic data, you know is sometimes provided to cars and it's provided by this company and You know, it's like there's there's a lot that comes together to make even that stuff work And I mean I think Google Maps Apple Maps and Waze are all using a flavor of the same like you know They may or may not make you know a good portion of the map data themselves or you know getting the traffic data themselves But they rely on sometimes other companies for that stuff So I can kind of understand that and I can respect it the car market is it's its own beast in and of itself So I think that's fair to point out but I guess so operating under these kind of assumptions that these are sort of the three or four Big, you know mapping solutions that are out there today. I kind of want to just dive a little head first into like first of all Which of any of these do you even have on your device or slash just your car even have navigation and I'm and then second of all Like when you go to each of these or if you just have one I assume you that's the only one you go to I'm a man of simple taste. I Don't pay a lot for things that I don't need at least I try to live that way So the cars that I have are older cars They definitely do not have navigation systems in them and the phones that I got have a built-in navigation app which you know for the most part is going to be good enough for me to get the job done and We'll talk about prices and perceived prices and what that actually means a little bit but that means that since I have no navigation app and I have Apple devices I'm gonna be using Apple Maps 100% of the time like that's the only app that's installed I don't even have the other apps installed. I don't use the other apps and there's really no need for me too So once again, you ask me what do you use and I say stock stock everything like I'm like that stock Honda Civic That's gonna keep running forever, right?
The reason that I'm still running is because I'm not doing all these like Ricy upgrades, you know to like give my car going faster than it needs to go. It's like the car gets me from me to be I'm good I'm simple. I'm basic. I love how you say you're the stock on a Civic But the stock on a Civic comes with navigation today, so no, I mean the stock is a stock 92 Civic Buying new cars here.
That's great. Yes, this is true. You're not buying me a 2017 So yeah, you're on the 92 Civic. I get it.
I get it the 92 Civic is a throwback from like episode what like three or four So it is a throwback. So okay, so you run just stock iOS so you got Apple Maps no Google Maps no ways Did you ever use those or was there devices you use them on in the past or did you pretty much always just like? Since cars are completely out of the question here Did you always just run stock with whatever your phone game with pretty much so I've installed the others I've installed ways I don't want to say like oh, yeah, you know, I only run whatever like I have mess with the others but they Never gave me anything that I didn't already get or I was never the target audience like I never wanted all the stuff That they gave me right a lot of times is because hey I'm going you know one place every day and after a while I get pretty used to going that way and I can try to you know route around traffic and stuff or any of these other special features We'll get into those but I'm a man of simplicity man Like I don't want to overcomplicate things and when the thing that comes on the device just works Like I don't see a need to jump to any other place. I've used them.
I best of them I use a Google Maps, you know for a long time before I finally eventually switch over to Apple Maps And this was probably more than the days where I was up to experimentation And I was like, you know, I'll try something new every week because I got the time and now I got kids and you know I've got time for that where I can you know try to open 18 different map applications or 18 different weather applications Like I just need something that's gonna give me decent directions get me from A to B and Do it without a lot of friction. So a lot of times I ends up being the stock thing I saw there was a deep cut in there to my my weather apps. I see how that goes So I guess I should say I should clarify that kind of what I have so my car does have navigation in it I don't use it at all. I don't think I've ever used it You have to do that thing where you buy the like map upgrades Like every year if you actually want to use them because the points of interest go out of date within like a year And I haven't paid for it because the update pack is like a hundred and fifty dollars every year And I'm not like six years behind so they want to charge me like a thousand dollars if I want the map upgrades So yeah, sorry Honda.
Haha. I'm not doing that. So the Apps that I haven't sold I technically have all three of these installed it, but I use them for very very different reasons Apple Maps is my go-to. It's probably what is used 90% of the time Google Maps.
I really go do for data I go to it for data mainly around. I like the fact that Google Maps is able to Show me When a place is busy or not? And so there's some value in that sometimes especially if I'm talking about like a restaurant or something like that I'm planning a day out that is kind of nice to see I could probably just as easily delete Google Maps and see most of that from The website it wouldn't you know, I think that is all data that's visible from the website So there's an argument you made it could be deleted. It also is not using it that much space on my device I got plenty of space so who cares ways is the one I don't know that I would get rid of at this point in time The crowdsourcing that ways offers with which traffic has saved my button more than a handful of times I've definitely been driving down the road when it just tells me get off like get off right here right now all of a sudden And you're just like why and you look up ahead in the traffic You just stopped and so it's telling me to run around something and that is something that Google Maps and Apple Maps both claim to do and I've seen both of them do it at different times but seem to do it a little less With urgency, you know, they wait until you know It's some point like it seems like a lot of people are affected or their algorithm takes time to realize like hey You need to get off and you need to do that now I don't know what the catch-up time is, but whatever magic sauce ways is using It just tells you get off do it now and you all of a sudden see it's just a bunch of people get out the freeway or getting off I'm just jogging through a neighborhood to actually get to where they need to go So it is definitely save my butt a few times 10 or 15 minutes each time So I will happily go ahead and keep that on my device right now for my own sanity, especially when I'm traveling out of town So that's kind of my go-to on each of these which I'm not justification wise It doesn't give Adam any more peace of mind, but just to give you a little bit of insight Adam Well for me like the crowdsourced data which we'll talk about more is yes It's a feature right and it's a good way to work around, you know things like traffic stops or there's a cop here or all these other, you know things that ways can actually do and I guess you know a lot of this is me showing that I'm simple and I don't drive as much as I used to like at all right like most of the time every day I'm taking a shuttle into work and I'm on a bus, you know for all of my time So when I do I have to actually drive somewhere I either know where I'm going and if I don't I don't need like an every day Like oh, you know like that's right.
I don't live this one half I don't need this crowdsourced data like I had to drive some places today And I got stuck in traffic a couple times which you know Maybe one of these apps could have routed me around but it had been so long since I had driven that I almost liked You know the alone time just sitting there and being in the car because I'm never in the car So this is just me getting old and saying get off my lawn and get out of here with your crazy apps and all their you know fancy Data and crowdsourcing, you know like I'll open up my paper map to figure out where I'm going for me to be right It down on a piece of paper and say I need to take the right turn here and here I won't have live directions always have a paper to reference Yeah, I'll give you a map quest up or any of the directions So you'll just need to use your odometer to figure out the mileage between each turn is that okay? Oh, man, I used to love doing that, right? You take your trip every single time to see like when you're getting close like yes I totally do this all the time with like I mean, you know like my parents were okay But like I would print map quests and I'd be like okay cool So we turned and sometimes they wouldn't reset the odometer or the trip, you know But they would just be like okay, we're at like 36 miles and we know we have you know to go to three miles So at 39 miles roughly, there's gonna be a street called, you know this turn right there And it was it was the thing and when you were lost man, you were lost. It was like okay now what I'm lost like like pull over at a gas Station and ask somebody you didn't know where you were going man.
It just times have changed times have changed I mean today It's just like your GPS is just like rerouting hold on give me a second So you might get to go on like family vacations and we used to you know trekking like RVs all over the place And you know they would have my mom and dad would have maps that they would have out like in the front seat You know my mom would be there saying like okay We need to go here and she'd be you know the rerouting or oh this road is closed for some reason because of weather So okay here She'd have to find another way around right so when there were two people there That's what we always have on family vacation So it was great because she would be like the the Tonton or the map quest being like oh go here then turn here She was ways right my mom was the og ways the og ways too good It's so funny too because you know I think about like um like triple a you know And like what did people use triple a for like back in the day was like everybody used triple a for the maps And it's like today and you can still go into triplating game maps But like my god like talk about a dying business It's like who needs to go to triple a and get paper maps anymore like that's that's uh, that's tough If you need to go to triple a to get maps I mean you need to just buy a smartphone, but anyway So the other question I kind of want to bring up is like where do you use mapping the most and so I bring this up because I Find I use them for very different things so like ways I talked about I use that mostly in the car anytime I'm out of town if I'm going around town for the most part I'm never gonna use maps at all because you know where I'm going I know it roughly about the amount of time it's gonna take and even if I do get into some sort of, you know Snafu traffic-wise I know the city streets enough that I can like you know navigate around or pop off the freeway and get around something Without it being a major concern. So ways is definitely like my in-car out of town, you know like go to Apple Maps I this is where things get weird So I have a watch and I have the Apple watch and I use Apple Maps for walking directions a lot Especially when I'm somewhere that I'm not familiar with it's really really really discreet to just be able to start the directions And this is something that I you know really like the feature of so that is something that I'm super, you know Happy to use with Apple Maps other than that like Google Maps Yeah, I mean like I said, it's just data. So for me like Google Maps is like research It's like I'm not even moving right now It's just like we're in Las Vegas and we're gonna go to some restaurant. You're like when are they busy a minute?
They're not that's that's what you call it a restaurant. Mm-hmm. Yes. Yes restaurant in finger quotes Yes, it is like a really nice restaurant.
They had really nice appetizers Yes, it's a restaurant in finger quotes. So anyway, so that's kind of like my go-to I assume for you Adam like Apple Maps is just used all the time. So it's used everywhere It doesn't is there's not a certain place to use that it's like in the car. It's research It's everything he's Apple Maps in the car.
I use it on a boat. I use it on the road. Yeah trying to go for a doctor Two's reference, but I don't think it landed But yeah, I use Apple Maps everywhere and I guess the where for me is technically more of a where win right because the only time I use it is if I'm going someplace that I don't know right I think that's probably common for everybody I'm not just like the one who says gets in the car and says like get directions home, you know Because I know how to get home unless I'm in a place that I don't know But yeah, like if I'm ever in the city, you know the San Francisco being the city that's closest to me That's big enough for me to get lost in I'm definitely using directions walking directions because you know since I have a watch You know, it's just sitting there tapping me, you know telling me which way I need to turn which is an awesome feature So that's great because I don't want to get lost in San Francisco I don't think anyone wants to get lost in San Francisco So having that ability has been great and the other thing I just realized that we completely forgot to mention when we talked about all these apps is public transit apps Right, we are fortunate enough to live in places where we do own cars and we drive around and we don't have I guess I said we're fortunate to own cars But we're unfortunate in terms that we don't have a vast like network of public transit to get us from A to B I'm fortunate enough to you know, write a bus to work every day But that's something that's not everyone has but if you live in a larger city a larger metropolitan area You do have things like trains and buses and other forms of public transportation that will get you from A to B And there are other apps that are built specifically for those and I don't think we mentioned anything like I think transit Mapper was one of them, right? There were a couple other ones.
Yeah, I think there's an apple transit that I used to use this all the time And I mean I was fortunate enough to live in like Orange County Which is like a pretty big metro in South California where there was a decent, you know transit system and man It was it was beautiful I used to write the bus public bus all the way to work every day and back And I mean I think a bus came like every eight minutes between the hours of like something ridiculous like 5 a.m. And 11 p.m. Or something like that I and it was like six stops on one line You know, I could be to work in like 18 minutes Where's the drive was like 14 and it was so great and it was maybe a quarter mile walk from my apartment that I lived in out there And so I really wish where we live now I had you know that option but I definitely don't anymore and I you know like you are in a lucky spot and that you have the nice You know carpool approach with with your shuttle So you know you're kind of lucky that way and I'll kind of get my my gripes out about carpool and all that stuff later Because I have some gripes so privacy Adam I know this is probably really up your alley, but you know, I know privacy is a concern anytime we talk tech stuff So, you know, ways has its its ups and downs and so does Google and Apple I mean, they're all kind of very different in the way they handle privacy I think it's important to point out to you I think if I'm not mistaken ways is actually owned by Google now, but it pretty much operates Well, it's owned by alphabet or whatever. They're like monopoly of companies that they own together Just all your data belongs to Google.
Just remember that. Yeah. Yeah, it all belongs to them anyway So anyway, but they crowdsource it which I mean right up your alley like the same time you like open-source software So why not you know open-source mapping, you know, or like crowdsource is not open-source. That's totally different Well, it's the whole point about being no, no, it's not No, it's not you can't go down this road And I saw this in here and I was waiting for this moment because crowdsource is not open-source The whole point of open-source is being open and transparent.
It means that yes, like other people can contribute to this But we're transparent in the who is giving us what right crowdsourcing is not transparent It's just a massive amount of data source together open source is all about transparency. That's the reason it exists It's all peer-reviewed, you know, everything has to everything that goes in there is reviewable by another person You can see exactly what it is why it's there crowdsourcing just like let's take all this people, you know And use that to aggregate data that doesn't say anything about whether that data is how it's being used, you know The transparency of that data doesn't say anything about that crowdsourcing is crowdsourcing because it's just taking a massive amount of information Sourceing together open source not the same thing not the same thing. Okay, so I can see where you're coming at You don't know where how they're handling the data And what they're doing with my personal data quote unquote, but the the side of this that I was kind of getting at here was that You know, it's it's everything is reviewed So in other words when I submit something like there was a cop here It asks everybody after me was this true or was this not true? And as long as it is it gets upvoted slash or downvoted if it's not true And then once a certain threshold is met it is removed from the map So that's where I was kind of going with the the like peer-reviewed side of that or like thinking through that logic But I understand what you're saying that there is very big differences in it We don't know what the hell they're doing with the data behind it And you know how are they using the fact that I go the same route, you know, you know every three weeks to this one destination or you know There's a million things we don't know so and no one can profit off of the data when something is open source, right?
Like you're not supposed to be able to profit off of you know Something that someone has contributed to because it's open right? No one owns it, right? But with your crowdsourcing is like yeah, we're crowdsourcing data But someone owns that data right that data is owned by someone and in this case It's that parent company that yeah, they want you all to you know tell them exactly where you are and whether information is true or not Because it helps make their product better But it also helps them learn more about who you are and the grand scheme of what they want to do Which is like how do we serve up a relevant add to this person when they drive by this in and out every single day? And we know that on Tuesdays and Thursdays around 11 30 p.m.
They drive by and then they slow down two miles an hour and it's not because of traffic That's because they're debating whether they want in and out so if we show them an ad at 11 15 right before they get to this place Then when they're driving by in and out they'll notice it and they'll get off and they'll go to in and out And we can have in and out pay us to get in front of all these people and do this because we can say we know that Lou Loves is in and out at 11 30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays Did I just paint like the horrible dark feature that is everything? Yeah, so the best part about this for me is that most of the time when I see ads in ways I don't know what they know about me, but if they think I eat at McDonald's a lot Which I'm gonna just tell them I don't so don't don't advertise that to me anymore or they think I buy really expensive gas Because I always see like shell ads and and the other thing I always see is McDonald's ads I'm always just kind of laughing because it's like none of it makes any sense to me, but hey That's okay. I think that those are the people they're paying the money So they're making some money somewhere along the line so it's working clearly for some people so The last thing I really wanted to like round out with was just kind of going through improvements I would like to see to Mapping in the future and this is like not for any one specific service But the four points I kind of like called out where route optimization So I really really really would love to see an option to put in like four to five addresses And it figure out for me that like hey I don't need to go to any of these in any specific order Just tell me like what is the least amount of mileage like what where can I go using the least amount of mileage that I hit all these in the you know You know right order or the right, you know Flow that is going to use the least amount of mileage or that will take into account like traffic or things like that So I would love to see route optimization So wait they already have route optimizing like right now Like are you talking about library routing when something happens or showing you that like these are places you can go or is like Hey, these are you can take this route? Which is this long or this route which is this long or do you want something you want legs right?
You want like leg one leg to yeah legs that would kind of be a better I think word I think that is the mapping word for it I'm clearly here naive all I'm saying is a prime example is I need to go to the dry cleaner to target to You know the grocery store and to the gym and then I need to come home How can I hit all of that and do it in the least amount of mileage instead of doing you know what the dumb human who is me Does I drive to the gym first and then I realize like okay I'm you know need to go here second and then you know I end up using extra mileage because I'm not smart At figuring all that stuff out, you know and I know it's not a lot right like I mean I might end up using three or four extra miles You know on a day off, you know because my mind said go here first then go there But if that three or four miles adds up over a year I probably drive a couple hundred miles more than I needed to just because I couldn't you know I needed to go six places in a day and I didn't have a way of optimizing that So I would like to see a way to optimize that I would also like to see time like leave times To be improved upon I know you can do some of this with With calendaring you can say hey I have a calendar event when do I need to leave to actually jump in the car and your at least your iOS device will tell you that I Think Google does something similar to this on Android You know it's pretty pretty similar in the way it handles that but what I'm talking about here is more Just sort of the unambiguous or the ambiguous situation where I am saying you know Hey, I'm gonna jump in the car tomorrow, and I know I'm gonna head to LA and I want to see how the traffic flows at different times the only service that seemed to have this Kind of the old that I saw was ways Google kind of had this but Google's implementation is pretty sad Like it's like it may take you between two hours and two hours of 15 minutes. I'm like okay Well, I could have told myself that ways seem to have it down pretty well to where it was like hey if you leave at 715 a.m It's gonna take you roughly two hours and 30 minutes if you leave at 745 it'll take you two hours and 45 minutes You leave at 7, you know or eight o'clock. It'll take this long It was like 15 minute intervals. I would love to see something like that because a lot of how I plan where I'm going Sometimes it's reverse engineering the how long is it gonna take me to get there?
That's horrible because you're asking it to predict the future, but then when something happens like an accident It's going to throw your plans to crap like there's always gonna be unforeseen There's always gonna be the unforeseen But there's so much data that you can pull from from the law of averages of just just years and years and years of people moving You know from one area to another that you can average that and tell me what it normally looks like and I'm not going to you know Fault you for the you know day that there is a you know tractor trailer that flips over and blocks eight lanes of you know traffic moving and You know all of a sudden the estimated two and a half hours is now four hours like it's gonna happen I'm okay with that. I just want to know roughly when I get into a car give me a decent idea of like on average If you leave at 730 in the morning, it's probably about two and a half hours Okay, cool I can plan with that and I can even get in the car like 15 minutes earlier If I want to be prepared and be like you know and I'll leave a few minutes early and plan for something else to go wrong And if you know the tractor trailer flips over today It is what it is But I would like some idea to plan that stuff without needing to create a calendar event to tell me how long something's gonna Take if that makes sense So you want to like what time is it best if I want to get to X, you know, give me an estimate? So you want an actual I don't know like when you said Google would say hey It's between two to two hours to two hours and 15 minutes like okay Well that that gives you an idea but you wanted to give you an estimate You want to plan your life around that estimate and when that estimate falls apart You want to be like well, okay, that was cool at least it gave me a number that wasn't real Yeah I mean to be honest that the times that it's wrong is so few and far between or you know I mean it does happen. I'm sure but it's it's viewing for between and I'll take the miss on the technology when it misses like that Maybe I'm just going off of like my experience You know living in you know the county that we used to live in and like every time I planned to drive somewhere There would always be something that happened and when I say always like every Saturday just without fail There was something that happened or every night without fail There was some construction that was going on like there was always something that happened that I feel like was never really planned It was always just something that kind of happened.
So maybe maybe it's tainted my expectation of these apps Yeah, I mean, that's that's certainly possible. I guess the the thing that you know right now ways does do this feature they this features built in and you can you know have it check you know rough estimates of time and It's every 15 minutes. You can roll the time interval and and see and I would like to see this come to more services Waze is the only one that I mean seems to do it. Okay for me It's like leave at 7 a.m.
To go to LA two hours and 13 minutes leave at 7 15 two hours and 19 minutes, you know Or and you can pick arrive by or leave at and flip the times around so you can You can do all of that. So that is to me really really You know valuable. I'm not gonna say it's like You know something like you said, you know, I don't I'm not gonna fault it if it's wrong It's fine. I just sometimes want to get a rough idea of what time do I roughly need to leave that to figure this out because traffic in Southern California It changes so so that's that's one one piece.
The other thing is carpool lanes and HOV lanes improvements So and this kind of ties in with my last one which is total cost consideration So like tolls where you pay to drive in a certain lane or drive on a certain road or whatever So I would love to have a map app that could ask, you know How many people are in the car or how many people are you traveling with and would factor differently the amount of time in HOV lane or carpool lane would Would take rather than the typical just like, you know, everybody else lanes or would give you the option if a toll was appropriate to say You know, we know that the toll on this road on this time of day cost six dollars and fifty cents And if you pay that toll your, you know commute time will speed up by X amount of, you know, time Just giving you the option and giving you all of the data because all of that data is like really readily accessible It's all on the internet. It's like it's in databases It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to plug all that stuff in on the back end the carpool lane HOV lane improvements I can understand that's kind of tough like because even that can be stopped sometimes It's harder to actually estimate that but I mean toll seems like the gimme and the The like maybe slight icing would be like hey, maybe we just do some sort of approximation with the carpool lane to say Like you're moving at 1.1 times normal speed or something like that because it's gonna be going a little bit faster Which I know I'm probably oversimplifying that that incredibly at the same time I think the fact of these services haven't figured this out is kind of a cause for concern so carpool HOV So you basically want like hey when I get in this car as long as I'm using this application and I told that I have Three people in my car basically tell everyone else who wants to carpool This is how long it's actually going to take me to get there Yeah, I mean it's it's something that it seems you know There is data flowing from the cars that are already in the carpool lane So you know how fast those cars are going so when you can predict that you can feed that data to other people And who are planning a trip right now or on their trip and have you know Three people in their car and now we can roughly estimate the actual amount of time that it'll you know take to get them to their destination So I don't see why that's not accomplishable and then your toll cost consideration Which the tolls will always jump up and down but you want it to basically say like hey right now it's gonna cost you this much And then live update when it changes yeah, but that that structure is already known like it is well well well well documented that if you were driving from you know where I live to San Diego at you know 10 30 at night on a Thursday you will pay this amount of money to go from this place to this place And if you're going from where I live to LA on you know a different freeway the toll schedule is picked Like it down to the every half hour or every 30 minute. I forget how often it or every 15 minute I forget how often it actually updates. It's it's set in stone.
It's not like it actually like it does change based on time of day But it does not change By any other time frame. So you should have some idea of like hey this person should be to this area at roughly this time So the total estimate should be this amount. Yeah, so I'm looking at it for like every other city outside of California too And like it ranges sometimes it looks like it's a PDF sometimes it looks like it's another table like a cost table So yeah, but I mean that that to me all seems like It's yes, it's not it's not maybe I don't know how you saw that problem You know as a tech company like do you do you have some you know Lowly interns up there and basically you know hard code this all into a database to get this in there once and then you update as necessary Or do you build some engine that you know scraped all these PDFs and you know or looks at tables and tries to get it all in there Once I'm not sure that's a problem for them to solve but at the same time It's all public information. So how can we not get that like into a database that is able to then feed users the information and give them options?
You know, that's it doesn't seem like it's if we've somehow been able to digitize the you know library of Congress I'm pretty sure we can figure how to do you know toll, you know cost schedules. Holy shit They have exceptions for like holidays too. Yeah Yeah, I mean it is like predictable down to the tea like it is like oh you're traveling eastbound on this freeway at this day in time You're gonna pay this amount like it knows like blue. It's effective What's it looks like it changed like a week or so ago like maybe two weeks ago, and then it also says subject to change Yeah, so okay, the subject to change thing is basically it's saying that the fee can change at any point in time Like they could they could they could re-vote on it tomorrow or anything Alright, Lou So you just need you want AI to build you basically away to scrape all this data and give it to you Predict the future tell you when it's time to leave and then tell you to get there all for something that's gonna be obsolete in 20 years You're right.
It may be obsolete in 20 years But yes, I don't think this is untenable and most of these toll schedules at least the two toll roads that I'm on like 99% of the time Which is a big ones in South California the toll schedule changes on a twice a year basis So I don't think it's the end of the world to update twice a year And I'm sure there's a lot of them around the world but that being said there are bigger battles to to fight for sure I'm just like I said, I'm already enjoying the time where I don't have to drive anywhere I'm going to even more I will enjoy even more the time that I don't have to Drive it all. Yeah, I just get into whatever and say like hey I need to get here with five people and then something you know just hovers over to my driveway and says alright Hop in we're gonna take you there I was like alright awesome and we get in there and then it flies to wherever it needs to go It drops us off and then we go cool cruise around do our thing and say alright I need to ride back for only this many people and it's like alright here we go and then it takes me over there And then that's that's what I look forward to I think when we talk about this and I can sympathize with a lot of your like frustrations Right where it's like hey with all the state is there it should be accessible or we should be able to build better You know prediction around this scenario this scenario But the one thing I'll say is that yeah I'm pretty sure mapping is hard for a lot of people and when we look at what we have now versus what we had before Smartphones existed right when you have the garments and the whatever right really the thing that we added is live updates You know some crowdsourcing data, but largely that remains the same right? I mean, maybe this is me being naive But mapping is pretty much the same thing even when you go back to you know like the spouse in the car looking at a map It's all just basically the same rudimentary You know steps were like give me for me to be like build me a lake from this And then the only thing we do is throw in a little bit more computer flavor in there or a little more calculation and you know Prediction and stuff like that which is granted what computers are meant to do right? That's the whole reason they exist is basically make our jobs easier and pick all the boring stuff that we don't want to do And do it for us, but I think Navigation will be it's going to be much more needed and influential in when we do start to move to like self-driving things or Autonomous vehicles because that's when things are going to matter But in the same vein mapping all the roads is really frickin stupid when you consider that roads are actually really ineffective for us Or inefficient ways for us to travel and when everything moves to you know flying or hovering vehicles in the near future Hopefully when I'm still alive because I would love to see that future like it's not gonna matter It's gonna everything's gonna be thrown out and changed So all of this is just considered like a stop gap for the people who still drive and want to be able to get from here to there in The quote unquote most efficient way possible, but when it's wrong, you know, it's wrong And it's just like whether man like the way I see this episode is essentially the same as the weather episode where it's like Yeah, here's all this stuff.
It gives you all this data Yeah, I don't care about all this data Just gonna use whatever it is and worst case scenario He's just gonna get in the car and drive to where he's to go and even if there's an accident There will be a detour sign where he has to you know move out of the way and go that way and it'll get him to the same time Hey, man, if you say that you could you can say that I Big to differ if we if I use ways and I have an option around it But you know, we'll we'll have to put that to the test I guess at some point. We'll have a you know a drive from my house to LA and I'll use ways And you won't mostly who gets there faster I'm just gonna call someone to drive me because I'm like I don't want to drive to LA like have someone else do it for me They can use whatever app they want anything else on mapping before we move on. No, I'm done Okay, it sounded painful. I've been looking for some golf gear Which I know you would know nothing about Adam because sport is not something you're aware of but I was not a sport Oh dear.
So If you can win millions of dollars added I think it might be considered a sport but That I can win millions of dollars by sitting on my button I'm playing a computer too And that's considered a sport I can make millions of dollars by sitting on my button playing the lottery lottery Lotter is not a sport if you can guess the right numbers. I'll call it a fucking sport I can play poker poker is not a sport. No, you do ESPN would beg to differ It makes them a lot of money not a physical sport. Okay, if you say so Golf is an old man sport golf is a sport that you keep playing when you're you know 80 years old I mean look look at look at the guy we have in the White House who plays more golf than anyone I've ever known and you tell me you tell me he's an athlete you tell me that I mean, this is the hill.
I will die on this is the green that I will die on is is the golf not a sport thing Like I will take that to the grave with me like come at me. I think it's stupid I never have enjoyed golf and I can definitely tell you the moment that golf went out of favor for me And it wasn't after I stole a golf cart and when it took it off a couple sweet jumps with my friend I got in huge trouble for that That wasn't the time it was definitely the time where I had to basically cater to all the spoiled golf enthusiasts, you know All the big CEOs, you know Who thought it was just you know white privilege for them to play golf and have everyone catered to their every whim You know wherever they were and as soon as that wasn't happening You know, it was like this was the most egregious thing that could ever happen on the face of the planet and everyone was stupid and Incompetent and I hate golf. I hate it so much. I have to rewrite all your show notes every week.
Oh Adam Yes, I know my description suck. I'm not creative. We learned we've learned this and we've learned this how many times over So I'm telling you man, but you got it. You got to learn like you got to find find a way to do this My my Photoshop skills are pretty pretty poor too.
So all of your skills are pretty poor right now, man Yep, yep, you have no skills knit nail and chisel do girls with skills The movie reference you probably don't get it. Nope. I definitely don't get that one What am I like five or five for show titles? Yeah, you do what the fuck don't you understand yet about you're the creative one?
