Shavuot is also called the Feast of Weeks and Pentecost. According to Jewish tradition, God gave the law on Shavuot. Thus, Shavuot celebrates the giving of the law and the revelation on Mount Sinai. According to Acts 2:1-4 it was on Shavuot that the Spirit of God was poured out on the believers and the "church" ("called out ones") was created.The primary passage in the Hebrew Scriptures that addresses Shavuot is Leviticus 23:15-22. In verse 15, the Jewish people are told to "count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering." The question is, "what is meant by the term Sabbath in this passage?"Since it was on Shavuot that the believers were placed into the "body of Messiah," also known as the "church," or "ekkleisia" (meaning, "called out ones") by means of the baptizing work of the Holy Spirit, then what Luke is describing are the events that led to the birthday of the "church."The promise of the Spirit then is, among other things, the promise that by means of the Spirit of God, one can be placed in the "Body of Messiah." This means that believers in Messiah and what He has done for them, are connected to Him as well as one another.
