05 - Give Yourself a Fighting Chance: Early Detection of Lung Cancer

from Hope With Answers: Living With Lung Cancer · host Lung Cancer Foundation of America

Early detection of lung cancer can mean that lung cancer patients have more treatment options and a far greater chance of survival. The 5-year survival rate for those diagnosed before the cancer has spread rises from 18 out of every 100 people to 55 out of every 100. But, the key is being tested for lung cancer early. Many times, there are no early signs of lung cancer in its early stages. Instead, most lung cancers are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease, making treatment more problematic, and as a result, significantly reducing the overall lung cancer survival rate. Today on the Hope With Answers: Living With Lung Cancer podcast, we talk to 2-time lung cancer patient and LCFA co-founder David Sturges about how early detection of lung cancer helped save his life. We'll also hear from lung cancer specialist Dr. Denise Aberle about the importance of early diagnosis. Finally, we'll get an idea of a new type of treatment that may make lung cancer surgery easier to perform and prevent a recurrence. Guests David Sturges, Lung cancer patient and LCFA Co-founder Dr. Denise Aberle, Thoracic Radiologist at UCLA Medical Center Kellie Smith, Ph.D., LCFA Young Investigator and Johns Hopkins Assistant Professor of Oncology   Episode 05 Show Notes LCFA is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the survivorship of lung cancer patients by funding lung cancer research.
