#052: Making Room for Change…The Art of Time Blocking

from Live Full Work Fun Podcast

Do you really want change? I mean really want change? With everything you must do in any given day, how on earth will you find the time? Far too often we remain stuck in an area of life because we become comfortable. Comfortable doesn't necessarily mean that we're happy in that area of life we wish were different. You grow accustomed to the sameness of routine. You may go to work each day, yet long to do something else. Even though you may be unhappy, frustrated, or shall I say…miserable…you remain doing the same routine each and every day. Why? The routine you've made for yourself becomes a level of comfort. To achieve any goal, to accomplish any big task, to make BIG things happen, you must prioritize your time. This means creating new routines. Changing your routine may make you uncomfortable. Change forces us to learn new habits. It forces us to think differently and learn new things. For some people, embracing change doesn't seem hard. For some, they actually look for change. For others, change seems to be very difficult. Change stretches us all and makes us all uncomfortable to some degree. If you're tired of feeling stuck and are truly ready for a change, then you must make room for it. How to make room for something new in an already busy life? You learn the art of time blocking. You schedule time on your calendar to do everything you need to do. You break out your calendar app or a good old-fashioned date planner and begin using it religiously. You must become more intentional with your time. You must budget and use your time in a manner where you make room for the change you want. Those items that you intentionally schedule onto your calendar receive a higher level of importance. In this week's podcast, I explain how Robert and I arrange our calendar. I share examples of how we use our monthly paper calendar for an overall picture of the year and how it keeps us motivated and how our shared Google calendar keeps us on task on a daily basis. Time blocking helps you to prioritise your time and lead you to the change you'd like to see. It allows you to know what activities you should say "yes" to and what you should say "no" to. Like with anything artistic, there is no one perfect way and things will change. After all, life does happen, and we are all faced with distractions where we must decide where they fall on our priority lists. Styles and techniques of time blocking change over time. The way I organized my schedule two years ago is much different than I organize it now. But what does remain the same, is when I want change to happen to achieve a goal, I make room for change by blocking time on my schedule. Do you practice the art of time blocking?
