055. Leadership and Mental Fitness with Cory Chadwick

from The Leadership Project Podcast · host Mick Spiers / Cory Chadwick

💭 Have you ever considered mental fitness and what it is?  How is it different to mental health?  How is it different to therapy? We are joined today by Cory Chadwick, an optimist and mental fitness and mindset coach.  Cory is the founder of The Mental Gym.Driven by a desire to understand how things work and from a history of mental health issues in his family, Cory went on a journey of discovery to consider what mental fitness could mean.Standing in a CrossFit class it occurred to Cory that we work on our bodies at gyms, why do we not do the same thing with our brains.  Why don’t we train our brains every day to build up mental fitness. This thought is what lead to the development of The Mental Gym and the concept of Living your 10. Considering on a scale of 1 to 10, do you want to just be satisfied with a 6 or 7 or do you want to live your 10?Mental fitness is about proactive exercise and wellness for our brains. Think of working out your mind the same way you would consider working out your body.  Doing it once or twice doesn’t make you fit.  The secret here is consistency and working on it every week.If you treat your mental health like a lifestyle it will habitualise in a positive way just like brushing your teeth. As a leader we do need to consider our own mental fitness so we can perform at our best.  We also need to consider the mental health and wellbeing of the team members that we are responsible for taking due care of. We have a great responsibility as a leader. How we show up; how we treat other people has a huge impact on those around you.Treat people like they matter and they will matter.  Lead with your values and live by your values. Treat people with the respect they deserve.Showing up as your authentic self, being vulnerable and being human as a leader provides an environment where your team can also show up as their authentic self. This vulnerability builds great trust as your team see that you are indeed human and self-aware of what you are good at and what you are not.One key to mental fitness and health is live with purpose and intent. To look for sources of sustainable and renewable joy and fulfilment. We also discuss the power of optimism in the interview. The key message is that optimism alone does nothing, but optimism coupled with meaningful action can change the world.Cory also discusses the role of relationships and open communication for your mental health and fitness.🌐 Connect with Cory:mentalgymlife.comSend us Fan Mail Support the show✅ Follow The Leadership Project on your favourite podcast platform and listen to a new episode every week!📝 Don’t forget to share your thoughts on the episode in the comments below. 🔔 Join us in our mission at The Leadership Project and learn more about our organisation here:  https://linktr.ee/mickspiers 📕 You can purchase a copy of the Mick Spiers bestselling book "You're a Leader, Now What?" as an eBook or paperback at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09ZBKK8XVIf you would like a signed copy, please reach out to [email protected] and we can arrange it for you too.If you're thinking about starting a podcast or upgrading your hosting, Buzzsprout is a great option!
