#057 - NERD ALERT: Trivia Edition, / Copyright Corner \ LOYALTY, Riley Gale Remembered

from You Should Check It Out · host Wimbly Stoke

Jay kicks things off this week with a Special Edition Game Show Trivia version of NERD ALERT, which we’ve decided to call NERD ALERT: Trivia Edition (copyright pending, see below). Today’s contestants separately submitted a list of favorite bands and Jay has chosen one from each list. Alternating turns, each contestant will choose from one of the following categories: Band History, Albums & Songs, Controversy or Potpourri. Greg will be answering questions about Nirvana & Nick will be answering questions about Rush. While this all sounds very straight forward and formal, this was an absolute blast!!! In other news, Jay has decided to release his trademark on the highly original band name “Ravenous Taint” so that is now free for the world to use as it sees fit!Song: Leo Kottke / Mike Gordon - AntsStop. Right. There. Put your nerd glasses back on your nerd face… because it’s time for another round of Nick’s Copyright Corner!! This week Nick frustratingly recounts the details of a copyright lawsuit, frets over the arbitrary nature of said law, and concludes by getting angry again at the capricious decisions juries returned in similar suits. So, it’s a lot like all the other times he brings this stuff up. This time however, he’s even more frustrated because the Grammy & Pulitzer Prize winning artist Kendrick Lamar finds himself on the receiving end of the latest lawsuit. The guys talk it out and Nick eventually calms down, so that’s good.Song: Kenrick Lamar - PRIDE.Greg tells us a bit about the Dallas based Thrash Metal band Power Trip and remembers their lead singer, Riley Gale, who passed at the age 34 last week. Riley was an incredibly positive influence on a lot of people and the outpouring from his diverse fans has been constant online since his passing. Power Trip was just coming up the ranks and making a name for themselves and Greg presents a solid case why they had what it took to be huge (Metallica comparisons are made frequently). We listen to some Power Trip and discuss Riley’s brief but lasting contribution to the genre. Rest in Power Riley Gale!Song: Little Beaver - I Can Dig It Baby
