0713, ABCs of Liberty

from To My Dear Friends Podcast · host WDF Sermons

True Liberty vs. Institutional Control: What You Need to KnowWhat does genuine liberty look like from a biblical perspective? In this 1958 message, W. D. Frazee explores what he calls the “ABCs of Liberty”—three God-given safeguards for preserving true freedom:A — AgricultureB — BibleC — ConscienceBeginning with the biblical Year of Jubilee and the words engraved on the Liberty Bell—“Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10)—Frazee examines God’s plan for human freedom. He argues that liberty is strengthened when individuals and families are not completely dependent upon centralized systems, when people have direct access to the Word of God, and when every person’s conscience is left free before God.Frazee especially emphasizes the Protestant principle that no church, minister, committee, institution, or individual should stand between a person and Scripture or attempt to control another person’s conscience.Jesus said:“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”—John 8:32Frazee reminds us that ministers have an important role in teaching the Word, but every believer also has the responsibility to study Scripture personally and form convictions before God.The message then turns to one of its strongest themes: liberty of conscience.“No one is to control another’s mind, to judge for another, or to prescribe his duty.”True Christian liberty does not mean rebellion, individualism, or freedom from moral responsibility. Rather, it means allowing God—through Scripture, truth, and conscience—to govern the individual soul.Frazee closes with Paul’s words:“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”—2 Corinthians 3:17And:“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.”—Galatians 5:1In this episode, discover why biblical liberty involves much more than political freedom—and why preserving freedom of conscience remains essential to authentic Christian faith.KEY THEMES• Biblical liberty and freedom• Religious liberty• Liberty of conscience• Separation of church and state• The authority of Scripture• Personal Bible study• Protestant principles• Institutional and religious control• Christian freedom• Agriculture and independence• The Year of Jubilee• Freedom in ChristSCRIPTURE REFERENCESLeviticus 25:9–10Leviticus 25:23Exodus 20:12Genesis 4:16–17Genesis 10:8Genesis 11:4John 5:39John 8:31–32John 17:17Romans 2:14–15Romans 14:51 Corinthians 10:292 Corinthians 3:17Galatians 5:1Isaiah 30:21SPEAKERW.
