076 - When Consuming Content is Actually Bad for You (and what to do about it)

from Burnout-Proof Your Biz Podcast · host Chelsea B Foster

The other day I was talking to one of my clients about her podcast queue and how long it was, not to mention the 100+ unread emails sitting in her inbox from email lists she’d subscribed to. She was feeling totally overwhelmed by it and guilty that she wasn’t able to “get to it all.” So I shared a story with her from a few months after I started my first business. I was subscribed to over 1000 email lists and tried to read as many of them as I could - with a handful that I absolutely read every day. And this was back when people were regularly sending emails 5 days a week. There came a point where consuming that much content was actually undermining my confidence and ability to run my own business and I had to let go of them, stop consuming so much, and start taking action. You see, when I was focusing on trying to get through all that content and never miss out on a single piece of advice or tip or roadmap (or whatever else they were selling me), I no longer saw myself as the intelligent, confident person I'd always identified with. I don't want any of you to go as far down that rabbit hole as I did -- so in today's solo episode I'm sharing my story of how I took back my expertise and confidence when it came to consuming the right type of content that serves me and my business, and began living life as the best version of myself. Being subscribed to 1000+ emails, opting in for #allthethings and feeling completely lost and overwhelmed Taking back my power and seeing myself as the expert on my business How to recognize when something is no longer adding value, just adding more noise How you can give yourself permission to clear the clutter turn down the volume on all the noise How to let go of the content that's no longer serving you and your business (aka - stop hoarding content & knowledge) Recognizing what you actually need right now + going to find it Want to chat about how you can take back your expertise or let go of the constant FOMO?  DM me over on instagram - I’d love to chat with you about it!  If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the voices in your inbox or on your podcast queue, I want to challenge you to really evaluate the content you are consuming and determine if it's actually adding value or just adding noise.  If it's adding noise, get rid of it ASAP. If it's adding value, keep it but give yourself permission to NOT have to read/listen to it all.  Trust that the right content will get in front of you at the right time for you to use it.
