09: The Importance of Teachers & School Counselors with Haley Luckie

from Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD

On this week's episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we had a wonderful conversation with Haley Luckie. Haley is a school counselor and knows the importance of the connection between parents with kids that have a disability and their teachers and counselors. Parents need to be extremely attentive with the people that are around their child the most.  Haley dives into topics like the duties and benefits of a school counselor, how often they meet with kids on an individual basis, 504 plans, and how to help kids struggling with homework. She also explains what a pyramid of interventions is and how it is tiered to cater to a child's specific needs. We as parents need to be aware of not only our child's actions but ours as well. We can either be healing our child's issues or making them worse. Haley speaks about not overusing the word "no", how not to approach our child's issues in a judgmental tone, and the ability to redirect our kid's attention. Learn how to help your child thrive at home and in school!    Takeaways:  [2:51] Partnering with your child's teachers and counselors [7:25] The benefits that a school counselor can provide [9:10] How often a counselor meets with kids on an individual basis [12:48] Pyramid of interventions [15:20] How a family can obtain a 504 plan [16:57] How to help ADHD kids with homework [21:21] How to help kids succeed at home and school [26:03] Nonverbal over verbal     Memorable quotes:  "A teacher is not trained for extremes, whereas a school counselor is much more trained for challenging behaviors." "The primary thing that a counselor usually supports is individual counseling to build your child's toolbox of skills such as calming down, waiting their turn, developing and maintaining friendships." "Academically, tier 2 is re-teaching on grade-level standards, which a lot of our kids with ADHD need." "A 504 plan can support a child with any type of disability; it's meant to kind of level the playing field for a child with a disability." "You can actually write a 504 plan based on the disability as long as the symptoms are present and they impede academic progress."    "Because our kids do struggle with inattention a lot of times, they miss some really valuable instruction." "Kids have a major power bucket, and we need to fill that as often as possible… the more often you give them choices, the more often you fill that power bucket." "Validate your kids when you can. We overuse the word "no" as parents and educators, and that should really be reserved more for situations that are dangerous or really bad for our kids." "Kids become dependent on hearing the words if we talk them through everything."  "When our kids get older, we kind of forget the power of redirection… sometimes we just have to get their mind to something else."   Dana Kay Resources:  Website - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/adhdthriveinstitute  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/74302454/  Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute     International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/    Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass – https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl     ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd     ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/
