(Premier épisode) Le dimanche 16 février 1997, le quotidien La Voix du Nord expose à sa une les visages de quatre jeunes filles portées disparues : Peggy et Amélie Merlin aux côtés de leurs amies Audrey et Isabelle Rufin. Elles ont toutes entre 17 et 20 ans et ont été vues pour la dernière fois au carnaval du Portel  (Pas-de-Calais), dans la nuit du 11 au 12 février 1997.Leurs mères, Marie-Josée Merlin et Laure Lamotte, tentent d’alerter la police, mais elles ne sont pas prises au sérieux. Alors elles décident de mener leur propre enquête. Aidées par leurs proches, elles ratissent la région, placardent des avis de recherche et récoltent des dizaines de témoignages.
