1.2 Who Is the One Who Knows?
from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre
Last episode we found that every experience is a meeting of X and Y, what the world gives us and what we bring to it. But that raises a quieter, far more personal question: if I am the one bringing all of that, who exactly is this "I"?In this episode Swamiji explores it with Sarah, James and Kai, and the beauty is that you can check every step inside your own experience. No belief required. The conversation uncovers the hidden grammar of all experience: every act of knowing has two poles, a knower and a known. The known is easy to point to, the cup, the sound, the worry. But when you try to point to the one who is aware of them, there is strangely nothing to grab. Even the everyday "I" can be observed. The moment you notice "I am tired," that "I" becomes something you are aware of, and whatever can be known is not, finally, the knower. This leads to a gentle but powerful distinction: the self with a small "s", the everyday person with a name and a history, and the Self with a capital "S", the awareness in which that everyday person appears. Not a better version of you, but a different category altogether: one is observed, the other is the observing. Why does this matter for wellbeing? If the everyday "I" is all you are, then suffering becomes total, "I am anxious" feels like the whole truth about you. The instant you notice that everyday "I" appearing within a wider awareness, space opens around the suffering. It becomes one event in a larger field, not the entire sky. This is the quiet shift at the heart of modern mindfulness-based therapy: "I'm having the thought that I'm a failure," rather than "I am a failure." The episode also gently distinguishes brain activity from lived awareness, protecting both good science and honest contemplation.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mindAdvanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mind Also available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
