1.3 The Two Faces of What You Are

from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre

Last time we found something strange: the "I" you take yourself to be is itself something you can watch. Which leaves a question hanging, if you can watch the watcher, what is doing the watching? Is it just a blank, an empty space? Or something more?In this episode Swamiji, with Sarah, James and Kai, explores the nature of that awareness you could never quite catch, and finds it is anything but empty. It has two inseparable faces. It shines, it reveals: whatever is present is already being known, and you never have to switch the light of knowing on. Like the sun, awareness reveals everything else and reveals itself, needing no second light. And it is alive, it knows itself: the bare felt sense of "I am," before it becomes "I am anything in particular," is the living self-presence of awareness. A mirror or a camera records without knowing that it does. Awareness knows. The course gives this unity a single name, Consciousness-Energy: the light that reveals, and the living aliveness that knows. The ground of you is alive and creative, not a blank screen.Modern science echoes this in two striking ways. Embodied cognition shows the brain is not a passive receiver, hearing a melody stirs movement regions, reading the word "sandpaper" stirs the touch region; meaning is built into perception from the start. And neuroplasticity shows the brain physically rewires according to how it is used: rehearsed worry strengthens worry circuits, while practised attention or compassion grows others. Why does this matter? Because the mind is not a recorder holding permanent deposits. It is a living, self-modifying system. Painful patterns are grooves worn by use, not verdicts about who you are, and the same living power that wore them can wear new ones. You are not finished. You have a hand in the making.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mindAdvanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mind Also available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
