1.4 Stillness and Movement Are Not Two
from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre
Last time we found that the ground of you is not a blank screen, it is alive, and it can change. That raises a tension almost everyone lives with: we long for stillness, rest, peace, quiet, yet life will not stop moving. So we feel torn, as if we have to choose. In this episode Swamiji takes that tug-of-war apart with Sarah, James and Kai, and finds something surprising underneath it. Stillness and movement are not enemies. They are two faces of one whole. Remove the movement and you do not get rest, you get lifelessness. Remove the stillness and you do not get life, you get agitation with no anchor. You can check it in a single breath: movement on the in-breath and out-breath, stillness in the two pauses, yet you cannot find the line where one ends and the other begins. The image at the heart of the episode is the ocean and its waves. A wave is the ocean moving, not a separate thing. Stillness is what the ocean is; waving is what it does. Two contemplative traditions meet here, one finding the changeless ground beneath all change, the other finding that same ground pulsing within the movement itself, and both arrive at presence in action: awareness steady and alive at once.Biology agrees. The body holds a steady temperature, chemistry and heartbeat not by stopping but by constant adjustment, homeostasis. The stillness of health is balanced movement.Lived as a split, this tension produces real suffering: burnout, when life has no ground and the recovery tide is suppressed; restlessness, when silence feels empty; and anxiety, the wave convinced it has no ocean. Seeing the two as one makes something else possible: rest without guilt, less catastrophising, a faster return to steadiness, real resilience, and more compassion. The wave still moves, but it knows it is the ocean moving, and that changes what you can bear.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mindAdvanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mind Also available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
