1.5 How the One Becomes the Many
from The Mind in the Light of Modern and Spiritual Sciences · host Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre
So far we have gone inward and downward, to the still, living ground of awareness. In this episode we turn around and follow that aliveness outward, into the actual world you live in: the body, the room, the people, the past you carry, the future you dread. How does one undivided awareness come to look like a million separate things? And why do the past and the future have such power to wound?Swamiji explores this with Sarah, James and Kai. The One appears as the Many without ever ceasing to be One, a principle often badly translated as "illusion." It does not mean the world is fake or your suffering unreal. It means the world is real, but not what it first appears: distinctions are real, but not ultimate. White light through a prism fans into many colours, each real, none a separate substance. Difference is not separation. That differentiating has two sides. It is useful: working distinctions make life possible, food from poison, your child from another's. And it can bind: when a working label hardens into an absolute wall, "I am this body" becomes "I am only this body," a passing mood becomes "my whole life," a diagnosis becomes "who I am." Much bondage is simply mistaking the contextual for the absolute. The episode looks at the scaffolding of the livable world, space, time and causation, real and indispensable, yet conditioned rather than final. Einstein's relativity reaches the same conclusion from the outside: space and time are relational, not fixed containers. And the mind itself builds time. Memory is not playback but reconstruction; imagining the future is simulation. This is why depression can be the suffering of a past rebuilt by low mood, and anxiety the suffering of a simulated future. The pain is real, but workable, because it is being made now, not delivered from outside.Explore the full teaching at www.vedanta.nz:Beginners (Conversational, free): https://www.vedanta.nz/course/conversational-the-mindAdvanced: https://www.vedanta.nz/course/know-thy-mind Also available as an app on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
