1 Corinthians 11-12
from Daily Devotional With Murphy Eyenike Hosted by Murphy Eyenike
What the apostle Paul intended was instruction for how married people, especially because of the peculiarity of the times they were living in, instruction on how they should behave themselves in public is usually interpreted as Paul hatred for women. His instruction on order in worship has been turned on its head to mean a believer should pray and check whether they are in sin before taking the communion. A man dishonors his head if he covers his head while praying or prophesying. But a woman dishonors her head if she prays or prophesies without a covering on her head, for this is the same as shaving her head. Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair! But since it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or her head shaved, she should wear a covering. 1 Corinthians 11:4-6 NLT. Paul did not married women disrespected by another man walking up to them so he say; married woman, cover yourself. Why? Because that was the way to indicate you were married in their culture. Today, it would be; wear your ring in public. He wasn't trying to discriminate again women. So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died. 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 NLT. Notice that when Paul mentions drinking the cup unworthily, he specifically says that your sin is against the "body of Christ", your fellow believers and not against God? Paul's instructions here is that there should be order and love when we to share a meal at the Lord's table, we should wait for others to arrive before rushing in so that some others get nothing. Paul says, you are disrespecting your fellow believers and there are consequences.
