1 - Dr Jamie Freestone: The Future of Humanity

These are strange times to live in. The human race's entire knowledge base is at our fingertips; we can call almost anyone on the planet instantly; anyone can access free AI to solve our problems; and there are seemingly any number of incredible scientific breakthroughs just on the horizon. For all this, the shifts that mark contemporary life often don't feel magical at all. Worse, they often feel annoying. So, what are the technologies that are most likely to change our future, and how close might they be?Diving into these questions with Chris, is our show's first guest: Dr Jamie Freestone, a post-doctoral fellow at the Australian National University working on the philosophy of autonomous systems.Jamie publishes regularly at The Stark Way on Substack, exploring not only technology and science but many of the most interesting problems of our time with both warmth and his generous expertise. In this thought-provoking conversation, Chris Endrey and Jamie Freestone dive into the future of humanity. They discuss CRISPR and genetic engineering, the challenges of geoengineering, and whether biotechnology will drive more change than information technology. The conversation touches on AI governance, autonomous vehicles, and democratic technologies—and whether these innovations will lead us toward utopia or dystopia.Key Topics: ✔️ The promise and peril of breakthrough technologies ✔️ Longevity and mortality—can we hack human biology? ✔️ CRISPR & genetic modification—the next frontier in science ✔️ Geoengineering & fusion power—game-changers or disasters waiting to happen? ✔️ AI governance & democratic technologies—can they fix our broken systems? ✔️ Self-driving cars, domestic robots & urban life—how our cities will evolveThis show only exists because of Chris' Patreon patrons.
