It is easy to claim closeness to God while hiding or excusing sin. John says God is light, so genuine fellowship with Him cannot leave a person content to walk in darkness. His light exposes hypocrisy, self-righteous excuses, and the claim that sin is not real. Honest confession is not hopeless.
