La Confraternita dei Battuti, presente a Trento fin dal tredicesimo secolo, fu un potente sodalizio. Ne conosciamo bene gli Statuti, poiché il loro primo statuto pubblicato anche in lingua volgare, è il più antico e importante documento in volgare trentino della nostra storia.I Battuti, o Disciplinati, o Flagellanti, hanno avuto grande importanza nella storia di Trento: con il tempo accrebbero il loro patrimonio immobiliare, ma anche le loro attività, compresa la fondazione di un hospitale - precursore dei moderni ospedali - che in città si affiancò a quelli già presenti dal dodicesimo secolo, nel rione di San Martino, a Santa Croce e al Belvedere di Ravina per i lebbrosi.Ce ne parla il professor Emanuele Curzel, docente di Storia della Chiesa alla facoltà di Lettere dell’Università di Trento.
