The latest research suggests as many as one in three admissions are malnourished. Malnourished patients have a three times greater risk of complications and a five times greater risk of mortality. It's the fourth most common cause of death, within thirty days of any surgery and yet it's the only directly modifiable cause of death in the top ten.
