REVIEW. “What did you take away from last time?” [Refer to last week’s responses.] “How did that go?” READ. 1 Samuel 7:3–4 (ESV): 3 And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods among you and direct your heart to the Lord and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the people of Israel put away the foreign gods, and they served the Lord only. Summary: Returning to God requires repentance. Discussion Questions: 1. Do you ever look at your own heart in the face of external crisis? 2. What does treating God as a "means" to a personal end look like in your life? 3. Do you desire God's nearness over what he can do for you? Why or why not?
