1 Simple Hack to Staying Positive and Optimistic (regardless of the situation)

Rate this podcast: https://ratethispodcast.com/mpi There is a story of an African King who had a close friend with whom he grew up that had a habit of looking at every situation that ever occurred in his life (positive or negative) and saying, "This is good!" One day the king and his friend were out hunting. The friend would load and prepare the guns for the king.  The friend had apparently done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off. Examining the situation, the friend remarked as usual, "This is good!"  To which the king replied - "No, this is not good!" and sent his friend to the deepest, darkest dungeon in the land. About a year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known to stay clear of.  Cannibals captured him and took him to their village.  They tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake, and bound him to the stake.  As they came near to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb.  Being highly superstitious cannibals, they never ate anyone who was less than whole.  They untied the king, they sent him on his way. As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for how he treated his friend.  Immediately, he went to the jail to speak with his friend. "You were right," he said, "it was good that my thumb was blown off." And he proceeded to tell the friend all that had just happened. "And so, I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this."  "No," his friend replied, "This is good!"  "What do you mean, 'This is good'? How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year?"  "If I had not been in jail, I would have been with you, and not here with you right now." It's up to you to decide what's "good" or what's "bad" in your life. Some people have the most difficult upbringing and end up being the most loving and successful people in the world. They took what was seen as "bad" and turned it into something "good". You get to do the same. Practice saying, "this is good!" regardless of the situation, and your brain will start to look for what is good.  When you find it, nurture the good with your attention and watch as it outgrows your challenges. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
