1 Timothy 3
from Riverside Reading Plan Hosted by Riverside Church
Paul's qualifications for overseers and deacons prioritize character over charisma, emphasizing reputation, self-control, hospitality, and proven family leadership as indicators of fitness for church ministry. The description of the church as "the pillar and buttress of the truth" establishes its crucial role in preserving and proclaiming the gospel against error and cultural pressure. The christological hymn about Christ being manifested in flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, and believed on in the world reveals the mystery of godliness that the church exists to proclaim and protect.
