For 210 years the Jewish people lived under the dominance and suffering of Pharaoh’s cruelty, and throughout history unto present, again and again we find good people living under the dominance and often persecution of the wicked who prosper. Why? Why do the wicked have power over the good? Yes, we can look at it from a perspective of that we are in exile, and we are in exile is because of our sins and unwillingness to surrender to G-d and to change our ways. However, there are ways for G-d to have us experience exile without the dominance of the wicked over us. For example, the forces of natural disasters, and the likes. More importantly, according to Kabbalah, the fact that we have sinned wouldn’t give evil power of good, and wouldn’t give power to the wicked over G-d’s Chosen People. Goodness and holiness comes from a higher source than evil and wickedness, thus, regardless of whether G-d is upset with us or not, how do the wicked have dominance over us? How much more so, when we aren’t talking about an aspect of exile, but an aspect of our serving G-d! How is it possible that the wicked dominate us in this area?! This lecture is based on a maamor the Rebbe delivered in 1965, on this Shabbat, in which the Rebbe explores how Pharaoh was able to chase of out of exile unto Mount Sinai to receive the Torah.
