from Workplace Psychology with Dr. Martha Grajdek · host Martha Grajdek, PhD, MBA
Burnout is an important work-related issue. It has been a popular topic of conversation for many good reasons. Burnout is characterized by mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion that is caused by excessive and prolonged stress. In terms of the work experience, burnout can manifest itself as physical symptoms, emotional and/or psychological instability, cynicism, decreased performance, lack of engagement, and increased absenteeism, to name a few. Left unaddressed, burnout can be detrimental to both the employee and the employer. It’s critical to understand burnout and its causes. Equally important is the commitment to burnout recognition and prevention efforts. Consequences are too severe to ignore. As such, burnout is as much of a responsibility for employees as it is for the organization.
