He rose to fame that same year by submitting Royler Gracie—a member of the iconic Gracie family—at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship using his innovative triangle choke from the rubber guard, a feat that helped popularize unconventional techniques like the Rubber Guard, Lockdown half guard, and his signature spinal crank submission, The Twister (earning him the nickname).
