Send us Fan MailBlessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him; the Lord protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blessed in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies. (Psalm 41:1-2)As for me, I said, ‘O Lord, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you!’ (Psalm 41:4)Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me. (Psalm 41:9)But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever. (Psalm 41:9) Psalm 41 opens with a blessing: “Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him”(v. 1). God’s heart is for the weak and the suffering, and He promises to uphold those who extend kindness to others. David then turns inward, acknowledging his own need for mercy, crying out, “O Lord, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you!” (v. 4). His words remind us that sickness and suffering often reveal our dependence on God’s grace. One of the most striking verses in this psalm is verse 9: “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.” David speaks of deep betrayal, a pain many of us have experienced. This verse was ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, who was betrayed by Judas after sharing a meal with him (John 13:18). Yet, despite betrayal, sickness, and enemies, David clings to the faithfulness of God: “But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever” (v. 12).
