107: Understanding Picky Eating vs Feeding Disorders Among Adolescents with Jaclyn Pederson
from Healthy Teen Life · host Healthy Teen Life
Feeding Disorders (ARFID & PFD) are relatively new when compared to other more established and commonly understood eating disorders, so it can be difficult to find factual, up-to-date research-backed information and support. Plus, because it's not typically considered a teen disorder, it is overlooked, misdiagnosed or confused with an eating disorder such as Anorexia Nervosa. In this week's episode of the Healthy Teen Life podcast I'm joined by Jaclyn Pederson, CEO of Feeding Matters, to discuss the intricacies of feeding disorders in adolescents. In particular we cover the two often overlooked conditions of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD). Due to this lack of awareness, it's now becoming more clear these conditions don't just effect babies or young children, but in fact, may be present among adolescents and even adults who were never diagnosed. If you're a teen, young adult, or a concerned parent who believes yourself or a family member to be a picky eater, you'll want to listen in. The episode highlights the signs, symptoms and importance accurate diagnosis; treatment options and the multidisciplinary approach needed for effective treatment; the role of genetics; how to advocate for yourself or a loved one; how to navigate the complexities of these conditions; and where to access resources that provide guidance and support. This is one of the most comprehensive episodes on Feeding Disorders for adolescents you can find. 01:33 Understanding Feeding Disorders 04:38 The Impact of ARFID and PFD 07:27 Distinguishing Picky Eating from Feeding Disorders 10:16 Navigating Diagnosis 15:07 Consequences of Untreated Disorders 20:30 Feeding Disorders and Self-Image 24:42 The Importance of Multidisciplinary Care 27:33 Support Systems for Families 29:10 Prevalence of Feeding Disorders 32:14 Putting Social Media into Perspective 37:12 Resources for Parents 37:47 Genetic Connections in Feeding Disorders For more resources and links visit the Show Notes Parents: Grab a copy of my FREE Parent Guide on spotting unhealthy teen eating behaviors and how you can help, click here!
