109 Amnesty International

from Porty Podcast · host David Calder, Cathy Crawford, Jaap Prins

Send us Fan MailThe Portobello branch of Amnesty International was founded a little over 40 years ago, about seven years after the creation of the organisation. You may have seen their stall at the regular market in Brighton Park or at the annual Village Fair. When lawyer Peter Benenson first set up Amnesty back in 1961, the idea was to win an amnesty for prisoners of conscience all over the world. What he and his colleagues may have underestimated was the sheer size of the problem - the number of prisoners of conscience was and remains enormous. And there were other international issues for them to address – the ‘forgotten prisoners’ and capital punishment. Although it’s an international organisation, it depends on local groups around the country – indeed around the world – to get its messages out – and that’s where the Portobello Group comes in.https://www.facebook.com/amnestyportobello/or contact: [email protected] or [email protected]
