109: Art Should be as Ugly and Offensive as Humanity w. Martyn Jacques (The Tiger Lillies)

from The System is Down with Dan Smotz · host Dan Smotz

The question of the day is... What is art? How do you define it? Are there boxes and boundaries that it shouldn't cross or break out of?Today's episode is a special one to me. Perhaps you've heard of The Tiger Lillies, perhaps you haven't, but they're a band that I stumbled upon late last year and it was quite honestly, love at first fright. It was art unlike anything I'd ever seen or heard, something so completely unique that it really stuck with me. There was just something about this band that really made me feel like I was listening to an encapsulated painting of the rawest parts of humanity in all of it's funny, ugly, lovely, beauty and I promise I've never done hard drugs. Some of their stories offended me. Some of them mad me sad. Some of them made me laugh. Some of them made me angry. And it was all presented in such a wonderfully absurd package with accordion, falsetto vocals, upright bass, clown makeup, no autotune, no robot processing, just real raw weird humanity. I had to know who the hell was behind all this nonsense that was plaguing my mind and affecting me in such unusual ways....So... this conversation is with the man behind the beautifully twisted curse that is The Tiger Lillies, creator and vocalist, Martyn Jacques. As should be expected, this conversation was an unconventional one, even for The System is Down. Martyn had a busy schedule and was a bit hard to pin down. When we finally found the time, he was in the back of a taxi on his way to the next show. He asked if I'd prefer to reschedule, so we could do video, but of course, I would much prefer the weird authenticity and be able to tell this story: This morning, I woke up quite early so that I could interview a clown from the back of a taxi in the UK. He was on his way to perform cabaret music with an accordion and sing about death in a falsetto voice for an audience of strangers. Life is silly and I love it very much.So all that said, please enjoy episode 109, my conversation with Martyn Jacques of The Tiger LilliesLet’s get weird!  Call in.
