10@9 Plan for the Long Term - May 19, 2024

from Mining The Riches Of The Parsha · host Rabbi Michael Whitman

This morning we distinguish between counting the Omer in last week's Parsha (Emor), with counting the years to Yovel, the jubilee year, in this week's Parsha (Behar). Rabbi Jonathan Sacks draws our attention to the former being every person's counting of days in the immediate future, and the latter being the counting of leaders, including our leadership of ourselves, where we consider the long term we want and how to get there. We dramatically demonstrate this with this week's Haftorah (passage we read this Shabbat from the prophet Jeremiah), which, on the surface, only a notary could love. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation. We take great pleasure in welcoming everyone with a warm smile, while sharing inspiration through prayer, study, and friendship.
