畫說漢字/圖解《說文解字》/1000個漢字的故事/東漢許慎原著柏（bǎi）柏的下部是木，上面是一颗尖卵圆形的“柏子”，也就是柏树的球果。可以说这是非常形象的一棵微型柏树。但在小篆中，柏子伪变为“百”字，并移到了木的右边。古人认为，恶兽“魍魉”（wǎngliǎng）会在夜间盗食尸体，而它畏惧柏树，所以墓地边常会种柏。同时，因松柏四季不凋，古人将其视为有节操的君子，孔子曾说：“岁寒，然后知松柏之后凋也”。现在，柏树多作为景观、绿化树种使用。（柏树曾是镇压恶兽的神树，曾被誉为节操高雅的君子，现在则是常见的绿化树。）
