11-1-21: Authentic happiness is written all over your face

from SAX IN THE MORNING · host Steve Sax

I would love to hear from you, just send me text and let me know what you think of the podcast. What does it mean to be authentically happy? That is going to be the subject of all three of our shorts this week as we look at three studies which show the positive long term effects of true happiness and contentment in people’s lives. Today we take a look at the famous yearbook smile study, where researchers looked at over 140 pictures of women in their college yearbooks and analyzed their smiles. They found that there are two kinds of smiles: the Duchenne smile, which is involuntary and had been determined to be an authentic display of positivity in the moment, and the Pan Am smile, which is fake. Over the course of 30 years the researchers talked to the 140 women and found that those with Duchenne smiles were more likely to have long marriages in which they were still fulfilled and expressed more contentment about their lives in general than those who displayed fake smiles. The lesson here is that those who possess authentic happiness as young adults are more likely to continue experiencing joy and contentment in their lives over the long haul. Remember, Sax in the Morning swag is now available on my Instagram site.
