In executive coaching one of the things I always emphasize to my clients is the necessity of curiosity. This desire to learn and understand new ideas and concepts is key in leadership because it creates an open mind and thus a team that is willing and encouraged to bring new ideas to the table.

One amazing example of curiosity and a refusal to be stagnant in their profession was Captain Sullenberger when he landed that plane on the Hudson River. In an interview “Sully” credited his curiosity about how he could become a better pilot and better prepare before each flight was key to him quickly identifying options in the ultimate high pressure situation. He had trained himself to consider all options with an open mind and that training led him to choose the seemingly crazy option of landing the plane on water, which turned out to be a life saving decision.

Whether you are an executive or a parent, the best thing you can be is curious and open to the ideas of others, because you are then most likely to get hit with ideas that are new and innovative.
