Summary
Sometimes in life it’s necessary to operate in survival mode. It’s what your brain evolved in. Always looking for the next meal, worried about surviving the winter or if that rustling in the bushes meant a bear was about to attack you. Modern life it’s more like starting a business or a career - every sale is vital and every unexpected bill can shut you down. Or we’ve got to overcome some family trauma, get through a painful break up, etc etc. There’s plenty of opportunities for your brain to think something is a threat and put you in survival mode to protect you. But here’s the thing? While your brain is quick to put you in survival mode, it’s not as quick to deactivate the alarms. Days, weeks, even years later it’s still scanning for the threat, and patterns that helped you back then are repeating themselves now. The problem is these patterns aren’t serving you. It’s like driving with the handbrake still on. Awareness of your habitual thoughts and actions are the first step towards retraining your mind to more helpful modes of thinking, feeling and behaving.
