from Legal Lounge · host Modern Legal

The concept of trauma is widespread but ever elusive, especially when analyzing trauma amidst a divorce, custody dispute, or ongoing litigation of family law matters in court. In this episode, Tiffany and Theresa of Modern Legal are joined by Rachel Yount, MSW, a mental health professional based in Charlotte, NC. Rachel shares her experience in defining trauma and in helping her clients work through trauma.  From prenuptial agreements to divorce, Modern Legal is here to protect your family at all stages of life. Schedule a consultation with our team today! Some key takeaways from this episode include: Trauma can occur when something overwhelms a person’s capacity to manage that thing in that moment. It’s very individual to the person and has nothing to do with someone’s strength. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, especially during a difficult situation like a divorce or custody dispute, focus on grounding exercises. Observe your surroundings and say three things you see out loud, do a couple of math problems in your head, or do some tense and release exercises. If you think you might be trauma bonding with someone, meet with a counselor or therapist to process what the healthiest version of that relationship might look like for both parties, especially when children are involved. If you have to choose between going to therapy or sending your child(ren) to therapy, it often makes more sense for you as the parent to pursue counseling. Through therapy, a person can learn to parent and guide a child from a much more regulated and peaceful place. Unfortunately, an unregulated parent cannot regulate an unregulated child.  The Legal Lounge podcast aims to dispel misinformation and downright bad legal information to empower anyone with questions about their family, their children, their finances, their marriage, and the law.
