113: Using Song Lyrics In Speech

Do you have students that love music?    In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing one of my favorite tools to use in speech therapy, and it’s something that you might not have thought of before: song lyrics!    I use them all the time during my speech therapy sessions because it’s super fun and motivating, and it allows me to work on a ton of speech therapy goals.    I know that it can be a huge struggle to get our older students motivated in speech. They may be embarrassed to be there or frustrated or even a little annoyed. Many of them are aware of their difficulties and don’t want to be reminded of them all the time. It is so important that we try to be as mindful of that as possible and keep their interests in mind to make speech more enjoyable.    Many older students are really into music and TikTok dances, so using song lyrics is a great way to get them engaged! It’s so easy to just look up the lyrics, put them on your screen, and utilize them for speech activities.    So what sort of goals can you work on with song lyrics? There are so many! You can target articulation, vocabulary, imprinting, social skills, and so much more.
