from Firefighter Podcast · host Pete Wakefield

The hills in the Athens suburbs of Greece are still lined with rows of burnt trees after fires ripped through the area in August 2021 as they experienced some of the worst wildfires on record. Forest fires are an annual occurrence in the Mediterranean, but various factors have caused stronger heatwaves and a longer, more intense, annual fire season. On average, 80% of the burned area across Europe occurs in the Mediterranean region, according to the World Wildlife Fund. This summer was also one of the worst on record. Wildfires tore through the entire region, from Tunisia and Algeria in the south to Spain, Italy and Greece in the north. In southern Turkey and Greece, residents and tourists fled areas ablaze as authorities struggled to deploy firefighting resources to battle the worst affected areas. Various news outlets reported that the fires caused at least 86 deaths. As part of The UK government response to support these efforts the Home Secretary called upon the skills of UKISAR to support this response and today im speaking with fellow members of UKISAR Dani Scott, Tracy Doyle & Joe Dennehy who were part of that deployment.Get notified of each Podcast episode as soon as they come out by clicking HEREFollow the podcast onYoutubeFacebookInstagramTo learn more about the podcast or become a partner of the podcast Jump over to our website by clicking HEREA big thanks to the support of our partners for being part of the FFP familyWilliam Wood WatchesHAIX FootwearWe are proud to support The Firefighters Charity.
