#116 - A Love Supreme in Seattle | New Music Picks | Precedence in Jazz

from You Should Check It Out · host Wimbly Stoke

A new 1965 recording of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”, recorded live in Seattle WA, was released earlier this week and has been making waves in the jazz world. Greg brings us the story behind the original album, which was considered a masterpiece almost immediately after its initial release (also in 1965). Coltrane, who died of liver cancer in 1967, refused to play his pivotal work in the years following its release, making this new release a true rarity.Songs:John Coltrane - “A Love Supreme, Pt. 1 - Acknowledgement”John Coltrane - “A Love Supreme, Pt. 4 - Psalm”Jay brings us some new music to sample this week. We listen to some songs and discuss new albums from My Morning Jacket, La Luz, and Parquet Courts. Also, catch Jay this Saturday playing with the Janine Wilson Band live on Facebook.Songs:La Luz - “In the Country”My Morning Jacket - “Lucky to be Alive”Parquet Courts - “Walking at a Downtown Pace”To wrap up this week, Nick presents the following questions to the group for discussion: How important is it to know the jazz greats to appreciate jazz?
