Podcast where we take an old car, your new kids' movie and decide if it deserves to haunt us for the rest of our lives or if it just needs to be busted. My name's James and it's no slimmer. Don't do it. You talk to you or me?
You. You're the slimiest one here. It's fair enough. Yeah.
Here's what I'm warm. I'm chill. That's what I mean. Exactly.
Oh, of course. So cool. And my name's Paul and can I move this gig along before this chocolate makes me break out? Are you allergic to chocolate?
It does not, isn't it? Oh, that's true. Yeah. You can't.
Well, you nuts will kill me. Yeah, there are. Yeah. I do not.
And my name's Colin and it's like taking candy from a gooey. On this episode, we'll be discussing the real Ghostbusters pilot episode from 1986 called Ghost R Us. IMDB says continuing adventures of the staff of the Ghost Removal service. Is that it?
That's it. Oh, fair enough. I mean, it is IMDB. This episode starts with Moistlan Arsh as Egon Spendler, Lorenzo music as Peter Bankman and I'll get him in a second.
Frank Wildcat as Raymond Stans, Laura Summer as Janine and Osenio Hall as Winston Zidamore. This episode was written by Len Janssen and Chuck Menville. Story End to us one, Jane Michaels Strzinski. Nice.
Spry's needed right to tell himself. Yeah, pretty much. Do you know who he is? I'm pretty sure he was the creator of Babylon 5, isn't he?
Yes, he was. Yes. I definitely do not have that written down. And the director was Richard Reines.
I've got a few facts here. All right, lay him on us. The real Ghost Buses ran for seven seasons from 1986 to 1991. Although the Rans are music provided the voice of Peter Bankman originally.
Apparently Bill Murray hated that he sounded like Garfield and he was eventually replaced by Dave Kooler, which is a bit ironic since Murray would later voice Garfield in two live action movies. That is a bit weird, isn't it? It is. Yeah, I did hear a different version of that and Bill Murray just said, oh, he doesn't sound like me, but didn't mean anything by other than that.
And then they played the guy. I've got problems with the voice of England in this. I don't know if you have. I'm sure we'll talk about it.
All right. In early promo, the characters look much more like their cinematic counterparts, but the designs were tweaked to avoid lawsuits. They don't really look like them, do they? Not really, no.
No. I'll talk about that later. The show spawned toys, serial comic books, and even a soft drink. The show continued to air all the way up to 1999.
Did either of you do any research or stick to your usual work ethic? Oh, Ouch. I don't know. That's biting, wasn't it?
Yeah. Ernie Hudson was turned down after auditioning for the role that he played in the film. Apparently, he was told they didn't sound enough like the character. Oh, do you think they know who he was?
No, apparently they didn't. Do you think he just took it? Yeah, okay, fair enough. Just walked out.
What else can you do? Yeah, that is bizarre. But it's perfectly cool. It doesn't surprise me.
It's all the way to Hollywood. No. No. The toys were quite interesting.
Did you watch the show as a kid? Not really. I mean, if it was on an hour's tie to my couch, then I would probably see it. But otherwise, no.
I don't know why, maybe because I was in love with the film and it just wasn't the film. I think I was the same. I think if it was on, I'd probably watch it. But I wouldn't make it my way to find it.
No. But the toys were, there were tons of toys that were made by Keira and then they were reissued by Hasbro. And the toys are really collectible. Apparently, they collected a lot of them.
This whole cartoon seems to be aimed at making toys, especially what happens at the end. Oh, yeah, yeah. Sorry. Was that a natural tie?
I assume it was. Yeah, I've got a list of some of the toys here. I mean, they did tons and tons of characters, you know, for the figures. They did a staipoff matchmallow man.
They did a ghost zapper, which was like a torch, which shone like images onto the wall. That sounds exciting. That's the one that when you open it at Christmas, when you're hoping for the fire's fire chief set that you get that instead. We have to pretend to go, oh, thank you.
There they go. Oh, that is the one you wanted, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's exactly what I wanted. You know that feeling, James, don't you? I cannot comment. I cannot recall.
Good answer. They did the XO1 vehicle. They did a proton gun that five projectile. Dangerous?
Yeah. They did ectoplasm, which is like gunk in a tube. Oh, you come with your own, XOplasm, don't you? That's true.
That's true. They did a fire host play set and yes, they did that helicopter vehicle that we'll talk about later. That's in this episode. Good, good.
And there were lots of other things as well. And they're all over eBay. If you look at eBay, you can find them. Never been into the Ghostbusters toys.
Other than like, like old versions are a version of the XO1. I've never been one to collect anything of that franchise. No, no, there's no people to me. I'm quite happy with just the movie and the first movie at the end as well.
James, have you into the Ghostbusters toys? Yeah, all of them really. I've got a whole collection upstairs. Oh, okay.
For a minute, I was going to be like, really? You've never even seen this before, actually. You've never even seen this before, actually. You like the movie, don't you?
Well, I've never taken an interest into Ghostbusters, but I like the films. I guess your age group puts you in a space where there was no Ghostbusters stuff. Because you're like between the end of the cartoon series and the toys and before all this new stuff started. Yeah, I remember watching the new stuff at the cinema.
Oh, the reboot. Yeah, I think I dragged you to that, didn't I? The recent one after life, or the one before that. The one that you want to know.
The one that you want to know. The one that you want to know. The one that you want to know. Isn't that film was the best of still on?
I think it might. Well, we'll get enough. Yeah, get off action, Devon. The Green Ghost in the movie, the actual movie.
Didn't have a name. Was it called Slime? No, because the name came from his line. They didn't actually call him that.
That's what I thought. No, he used the Slime. Yeah, the show was actually quite hit, wasn't it? But even though it was ABCI, a consulting firm, to take over production.
And they just completely overhauled the show and they changed character personas, replace actors. They removed any occult references. to replace actors, they removed any occult references and then re-edited season one episodes. So they would fit in with the layer changes.
Yeah, they wanted to even get rid of Dan Akroy's character. What's his name? Bankman. Is it Bankman?
Okay. Yeah. Okay, we want to get rid of him. No, Dan Akroy.
No, sorry, that's Ray's stance isn't it? Dance, so they wanted to get rid of stance at one point because they thought he was needless. Isn't that what you tried to do to me over the course of 30 years Colin? No, but if J keeps coming in then, you know.
I'll get less and less to do, that's all right. That's right, yeah. Also, it was even little things like they wanted, Janine's glasses changed from pointy to rounds because kids don't like pointy things. I'm pretty sure kids do.
Love pointy things. Yeah. Yeah. These companies that they hire to do this market research, I think they just make it up, don't they?
Yeah, and then cash the check. Link's out, I think that's what's going on here. Yeah. Apparently we've only watched the one episode, but apparently going forward into this series, there were lots of different animation styles on show, was always the same style in every episode.
That'd be interesting. Some of the episodes were produced in Japan and then other episodes were found out to smaller Asian countries as well. So I would imagine all the different animators were influencing the styles and things like that. Because this style in this episode, it's very much of that 90s, 80s look, isn't it?
That kind of Inspector Gadget type look about, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. You'd deny it what we're talking about, haven't you?
When we're going back to the Asian, it being distributed to Asian countries. As far as they even allowed something called Ghostbusters, because I'm pretty sure places like Japan have a ban on stuff to do with like ghosts and skulls and like dead things in like media, so. We might have to fact check that one. What are you basing that one?
Have you looked at up? I don't know. He's got my approach to making bold statements and I might get to it. I'll see where he gets it from.
We'll leave that one there. Yeah, yeah. We'll let our listeners decide. I'm sure it's true.
I don't know. Hey, that's all you need these days. That is very true. Yes.
OK, so let's go on with the show. So that's supposed to first thing to say. The animation choices are interesting. Well, I think it looks like a classic hero character.
He's got a lot more of her up top than Bill Murray ever had in the movie, isn't he? Yeah. I like the background at work. You know, like of different things, like especially when they go to Brooklyn and go to the factory and things like that.
There's some nice detail in the background work. Yeah, there's a lot of detail going on. There's a lot on the screen, isn't there? Yeah.
We're definitely not dealing with filmation, are we? No, it's a little better than that. It is, absolutely. Yeah.
Jay, what do you think of the animation? I always, while watching this, I thought to myself, are these the Ghostbusters or people in cosplay? Because they... You could be like a fan version of the film.
So I have a question for you. Like, because I don't really watch many... Do they do like Saturday morning cartoons anymore? Not really.
No, but I suppose Batman wants the closest you get to that. Yeah, sure. Well, you know some new ones. You don't really watch any of them, do you?
It doesn't like anything like that. No, I've started watching a lot of like old classic stuff from like the 70s and like the 80s. Right. I've used it, I watch a lot of the old G.I.G.
G.I.G. G.I.G. That's a whole, whole, whole different series. Yeah.
No, the G.I.G. kind of ones. I've watched a lot of them a few years ago. You've got all some bow cartoons.
I watched some like 90s superhero kind. Like Spider-Man Hulk. That's pretty much all the... I watch a lot more like old live action TV shows and stuff.
Right. Yeah, slightly off topic. What's the one that you currently watch in the moment that you discovered? I've been watching the 1970s Japanese Spider-Man TV show on YouTube.
Oh, oh, I might check it out on YouTube. Yeah. Oh, yeah, I'll follow some episodes of it on YouTube. Is it dubbed?
No, but it's got subtitles. Subtitles. Oh. Is it from the costume?
It's not the Marvel's Mime Man. They just let them use the costume. Oh, okay. So that was actually going to be my question whether it was the costume.
Because sometimes you get like Chinese Spider-Woman and watch it and it's like, oh, it's just the name they've stolen. Yeah. No, no, no. Or even it's a dog to name their stolen.
Yeah. The Marvel did a deal with one of the Japanese TV companies and they basically said, you can use the name of the character, but you can't make it like anything close to the comics. So they basically just did what every other 70s superhero TV show did back then and just called it Spider-Man. So there's like robots and like flying cars and monsters.
It's just typical. Yeah. It's very power up. It's very power up.
Why we're at Airsoft's topic, you know that the rumor for the next G.I. Joe movie is that it's a Transformers G.I. Joe movie. It's a lot of fun because it's the same companies, isn't it?
So it's bangs about it. Yeah. Trying to build a universe I assume. I'm sure you're not interested in the slightest.
No. No, really. Get me robots out, my G.I. Joe.
Although it does appeal to my, like I prefer the science fiction element of G.I. Joe than the military element. So maybe you might see a bit more of that. Yeah.
I just, I want to be there when you watch it. At least be sky-pid, yeah, when you watch it. Yeah. The grumbling that's going on in the background.
Was this shit? Yeah. Spangler in this, he's got kind of a 1950s quiff going on. Like a little Mr.
Whippy, Brufant thing at the front, that's me. Yeah, he does. Where's that from? I should go down.
Yeah, there's some interesting design choices. So, Slimer. Uh huh. Are we fans of Slimer?
I'm not. I'm irritating. It seems like this was a thing of 90s and 80s cartoons where they had to have some kind of small, I would say, creature. Yeah.
That was irritating. Yeah. Arco, and Masters of the Universe. That's one that comes to mind, yeah.
Yeah, you got that tiny unicorn in Dungeons and Dragons. I forgot about that one. Yeah. Yeah, you got that alien in the Flintstones.
I suppose the men to provide comic relief, aren't they? But I'm worried that going off this episode, that every episode following it is going to be what Slimer gets up to. In fact, didn't they rename the show? Eventually Slimer and the real Ghostbusters?
Yeah. Yeah. That's interesting. Yeah, I can see that.
I suppose little kids would probably like Slimer, wouldn't they? Well, did you? You asked him, but he's not that little. He's not that little.
He's told them. What do you think it's Slimer, man? I think the same as you, but really I never much cared for him. I just saw him as another character, really.
Well, in the movie, you made it. In both. Yeah, he's not. Nothing important.
No. Except for being the main cause of stuff that happens in the episode. Yeah, I'll get to that. Yeah.
I mean, he's meant to, they kind of forgive him for what he does in this episode, but he doesn't really do anything to fix the problem that he started anyway, does he? That's not true. He... No, he goes and attacks the thing at the end, doesn't he?
Yeah, nothing happens, though. He doesn't do anything. He's a heroic bravery. Must have sparked something in their minds of...
Forgive her. Forgive her. That's not worth it. Forgiveness.
That'll work. That'll work. That we have an episode title. Forgiveness, yes.
So what do you think of the read-jig theme tune? It's all right. It's often special. I mean, this episode has another tune in it later on.
Apparently it's two girls that do the music, other singers for all their songs. There was actually a real Ghostbusters soundtrack album. That doesn't surprise me. It's very 80s, isn't it?
Yeah, I mean, it is. Yeah. That's a lot of tunes. The Commodore 64 I have listened to.
And I actually quite like the Mega Drive one. Oh, OK. The Mega Drive one's all right. Better samples from the Commodore 64 I.
OK. I remember that one. Well, the Commodore 64 I. You hit the space burn anyway.
Oh, it's a spark! Those are the days. Sure. All right.
Did they drive around in XO1 listening to their own theme tune? Because that was an impression that I got. Because every time they got in it, it seemed to be coming out of the radio at one point. Well, you would if you had the theme tune.
The type of stuff that you walk out every time you walk out your front door. It's like the Nash one. Yeah. Yeah.
Oh, he's the man, indeed, just rules. Strolling down through after doing it, doing it a little bar. How does he know this? How does he know these things?
I've seen, yeah, Paul's not obscene. He just needs to be seen doing his shopping. Like me all the time. So, I think he was struck down the line.
He flurs. I could do that. I could pull that off. I don't think you could do flurs.
Well, no offense, but you're a little, you know. A little what? You're a little teapot. Shortest at it.
He's my handle. Yeah. He'll listen to those. Exactly.
Yeah, definitely. wanted chocolate factory and he started raining chocolate. I hope the soft sensors. I like that line.
Yeah, it was a good line. And as I said, Slimer seems to be now part of the team. Yeah, it doesn't get uniform though. Yeah, that's a bit, you can use the app to HR, doesn't it?
Yeah, it's Ghostist. Ghostist, yep. Do you think that the game's slimer interview before taking a month? You have to give him a resume.
So, there's a bit of a gap in your employment history. What have you been doing for the last 50 years? Oh, hot dog vendors aren't in my lane properly. What is he a ghost of?
Food. He's a food ghost. Yeah, he's a food ghost. So he's food come back to life.
I'm just presumably with some fat guy that died. No legs. Maybe he's like seven and he's an accident that killed him. And why is he green?
Okay, he got used to. He got used to the ghost. Well, another ghost. Yeah.
Maybe he got slimed to my key slimes people. So he's on a vendetta mission. Oh, yeah, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay. This is the problem I have with the cartoon though. There seems to be a very strange division between what is a ghost or what is a monster? Yeah, because the ghosts that come later, are they ghosts?
Are they monsters? Are they demons? Well, they're like driving cars and things. Yeah.
They're interacting instead of business at one point. They do. They do. Love to be the bank manager of giving that long.
Yeah, where did they get that van from? They got a logo on the side. They got a logo on the side. We are giving these characters, firmware, thought and back story.
I'm pretty sure these writers did. Yeah, maybe a little too much. Although it is Jresintz, Jresintzky. So maybe, yeah, somewhere there's a whole book.
Yeah. Massive bubble in there. So the voice of Vankman, I find it very annoying. Very quickly.
Who did it? I mean, I get these trying to do Bill Murray. And he's got that irreverence that Bill Murray has. But it just sounded like he was even really tired or he was just downright bored to me.
The way he was delivering the limes. That's kind of the way Bill Murray sometimes delivers his lines, isn't it? Not to that extent though, or extreme. I thought the same about the voice center that was doing the voice of Egon.
He sounded like he couldn't be bothered to put down the Eof his lines. Do you think maybe they just thought this is going anywhere? Someone is going to give him a full... I think the only person that gives the most effort in doing a good job and sounding like the film actor is the person that plays Ray.
What about Janine? A lot of these actors double up, because I'm sure the one doing Janine also does the voice of the female monster. It's the Jeep 85-year celebration event. 85 years of daring to ask, what if?
Like, what if we didn't sacrifice capabilities for comfort? Or what if nothing on the road ahead could hold us back? For decades we've chased every, what if, why not, who, where and how? And the answer?
Because we can. Right now it gets 0% financing for up to 84 months on select models. Plus, eligible customers get $1,850 in Jeep Anniversary bonus cash on all Jeep models. See your Jeep dealer for details.
That was the thing later in the episode. That's a standard practice for cats. Yeah. This is one of the rare ones where they actually recorded together.
Oh, well, in the same room? Yeah. Oh, OK. I suppose that helps if they're all playing.
I'd like to know if there was any sort of ad-libbing going on in that mistake. I don't know. You don't tend to get much ad-libbing in animation because, you know, you've got to animate the thing. Yeah, I suppose.
Yeah. You want to make it too difficult for them to do. Plus also the way these actors are doing their lines. I don't think they could care much to do when you add a living.
It wouldn't be bothered to do the same. All right. That's kind of the way we approach life-calling. I'm ad-libbing all the time.
That's true, actually. In fact, I would say I've ad-libbed my entire life. Yeah. I'm thinking about it now.
Because I'm telling you, if there's a script for my life, I'm going to get that script writer because they're a video. Yeah. Because no one's writing this rubbish. I'll feel it.
Yeah. I'm with you. Yeah. So the devices in this cartoon can actually pinpoint exactly what kind of ghost they're dealing with, right down to how intelligent the ghost is apparently.
Yeah. I mean, who came up with these classes? Class 5, full torso, class 7, floating vapor. There's a little bit of that in the movie, isn't there?
There is. But I noticed in this episode that ghosts use it too. So they classify themselves? Yeah.
Both pronouns. They then. So it's he, she, they then, class 1, class 2. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, fine torso. And up. So slime is a what? Class 5 flying torso, is it?
Oh. Suppose. I mean, to be honest, they don't really know what the difference is between a class 7 phantom, a class 5 vapor and a class 4 full torso. Well, the way it sounds, the more advanced they are.
Because if you're a phantom, then you've got to be like bottom of the tier. Yeah. Well, the big ice-thaw thing later in the episode. That's like a class 8 or 9, isn't it?
I think it's a class 10 at one point. So you can just keep going up. You get the impression you make yourself. The, yeah, the entity that the ghost wake up is apparently a full magnitude class 10.
Oh, OK. Which is on my Tinder profile. Yeah, many hits. What a two.
All right. Leave it there. Couple of, couple of spectres. Full torso?
No. Floating vapor. All right, OK. I, I did like how, when we get these three ghosts or monsters or whatever they are.
They sound like New York mobsters. I thought that was quite, quite fun. Yeah. I hope they continue that through the series.
Like they're all from wherever they're low-cow. Yeah. That they're originally from. That'd be good.
So you get some like redneck ghosts. You can't use that term, probably, you know. That's a term. Oh, no, that's OK.
You get some southern hillbilly ghosts. I think that might be worse. I can't do that. You know, you get some ghosts that are located from the southern states of America.
Can I do that? Yeah. I think you can go with that. I think you can go with that.
So the ghosts jump into the chocolate mixer and the gang of, so they fire their proton guns into the tubes that force them out and into the trap. Pretty sure it wasn't that easy in the movie, was it? No, no. Let's assume the traps are a little more advanced.
Yeah, they don't know what the time period is between the movie and the series. Well, long enough that the facial appearance has changed. And they've had her. Yeah.
New her, so. I did like all the sounds and all the gadgets and everything did look like the ones in the movie, so I thought that was fun. They didn't change those things too much, did they? No, they didn't.
And there's a lot of people getting covered in gunk. That's something that became a ghost bust. The ghost bust is staples, isn't it? They really ramped it up in that second movie, which I don't like.
Does anybody like it? I think people aren't getting on the second movie. It's like they took everything that was everyone liked about the first one and thought, you know what, the best thing to do is just turn all of your thing up to number 10, isn't it? Or 11 and just make it bigger and more slimy.
Last time, that's the one. That's the tagline for the poster. If you'd seen ghost busters two first, would you like it, Mar? That's a tough one, isn't it?
That's not saying if there hadn't been a Terminator one or a Terminator two would terminate, salvation's been good. You know what I'm saying? Well, no, that's a little extreme. That's not saying if you hadn't seen original Trek, would you have liked Star Trek 5?
You ask the wrong people. That's a concept I can't even ask. You're messing with our minds, that is. I'm just saying, because I saw the police academy two before I saw the police academy one, and I think the police academy two was really funny, but obviously it's not as funny as the first one, but because I saw it first.
If I'd seen it second, I would have been like, well, that wasn't as good. I think I saw the second one before the first one as well. I think I'm diving down to the fact that wasn't the first one rated slightly, it was a bit more racy than the second one, wasn't it? Yeah, I think so.
That's more driving? Yes, that's exactly what we're talking about. I'm just remembering the kind of humor Colin did in the other podcast, I'm trying to redo it. I appreciate the fact that he used the word humor.
He's sucking up. He wants my job. What's wrong? What's wrong?
What's wrong? We'll talk. We'll take this offline. Yeah, okay.
I'll send you my resume. Okay. Nice to fill one too. The owner of the Chocolate Factory, he then gives them a lifetime supply of chocolate in appreciation of what they've done.
You know which kind of factory art art you want to do, you guys. You've got free gifts, don't you? I've got to remember that this is junior retrospective before I answer this. Don't worry, I thought it seemed something.
Well, obviously it's a beer factory. It's got to be a brewery, isn't it? Yeah. Well, I want to know, as a lifetime of chocolate, what exactly is that?
Because some people could eat a really seriously large amount of chocolate. Some people, you know, buy it every so often. So it's a very loose term. I'd kill that factory.
We can't produce it fast enough. I don't know. You're like Simon. In many ways.
Yeah, it would be. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In many ways. Oh, no legs.
Oh, yeah. You should be eating chocolate. Oh, yeah. How do I know you're not a ghost?
Because I only ever see you these days through Skype. So I don't know if you've got legs. How do you know? How do you know you're a real man?
I don't. You could be AI for an I know. Could be. Could be.
Could be. Could be. Could be. Recypt.
Recypt. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.
So we go back to the firehouse, which looks exactly as it did in the movie. Yeah. Yeah. I've been there.
I know you have. Yeah. The real firehouse is in New York City. Right.
It's not the ghost bus to sign, but they've put it inside of. We've been in it. You can't. It's still a working fire station.
Oh is it? Yeah. Yeah. I think it's a professional opinion.
Jay, do you need cartoon version? Hot or not? Sure. I can't really remember the film once.
Sure. Yeah. All right. So we get a non answer from Jay, parl.
I'm glad you asked. Yeah. I think she's a cartoon character's go. Yeah.
And we know you're a cartoon character. This is coming from you, Colin. Yeah. That's coming from me.
I'm guessing you are on the side of the movie. Yeah. Yeah. Only because I don't.
You know. Going for celluloid. Cinematic. I'm not even going to bother.
It was going well, the direction by Brae was going, keep it clean. And then the old person was going, nah, don't. I give up. Yeah.
If we could be bothered to do Patreon stuff, that we said before, we would record two versions of this. How could you record a non-clean junior retrospection? Because then it wouldn't be junior, would it? Well, we'd edit James out and just leave us in.
It's also isn't there a point when you can't call it junior, even if Jay's on because Jay would be like 35 and will be 80? It could just be recording. Both of you are still recording with me when he's 34. I won't.
Yeah. Well, both be. Well, Jay and I'll be recording. I'm not that bad, Jay.
If it depends if you can hear us with your brain in the jar. That's true. That's true. I'm planning on that, to be honest with you.
Yeah. I think it'd be nice. Probably James is planning on doing it to you anyway. I don't mind.
You put my brain in a jar filled with alcohol. I'll just float around in there. That'd be nice. I'll just say it was usual, right?
No change to your normal life. Just top it up occasionally. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. I think everyone's have to worry about pants and stuff. Exactly. The only difference.
I mean, I don't worry about those now, really. Yeah, they've been complaints. So they give the free tocklets to Janine. And it turns out that Slimer has eaten all of them.
Good. Now I'm starting to like him. Yeah. He's saying he's like Robin's little bell, isn't he?
It's not that little. It's not that little. A little bit. A veteran wants to blast him, but Ray says, take it easy and he'll discipline himself.
I thought that sounded like that. Did you guys? You don't like the sound of discipline? I just don't like the sound of Ray discipline in Slimer.
How would he do it? Did he just swipe and he just hit a jar of beer? What? Slimer.
